## TL;DR

The destination region hit its EBS snapshot quota, so new copies are rejected. Either request a limit increase for the region or delete obsolete snapshots there to free quota, then retry the copy. Snapshot limits are per region, which is why the source region was fine while the destination failed.

## Error

```text
agent's cross-region snapshot copy failed with "SnapshotLimitExceeded"
```

## Steps

1. Confirm the limit: check the destination region's snapshot count against its quota. Expected: the count is at the limit.
2. Identify obsolete snapshots in the destination region (old copies superseded by newer ones). Expected: deletable snapshots are listed.
3. Delete the obsolete snapshots or request a quota increase via Service Quotas. Expected: headroom exists in the destination region.
4. Retry the cross-region copy. Expected: the copy starts successfully.
5. Add snapshot lifecycle management in the destination region so the quota does not fill again. Expected: old copies age out automatically.

## When to use

- Cross-region snapshot copies fail with SnapshotLimitExceeded.
- The destination region is at its snapshot quota.
- DR copy pipelines stall on quota.

## When not to use

- The copy fails on permissions (an IAM problem).
- The source snapshot does not exist.
- The limit is on the source region's API calls (a throttling problem).

## Tool compatibility

AWS EBS snapshots, Service Quotas (current 2026 releases).

### Variant phrasings

### "snapshot limit exceeded" on copy

Free quota in the destination region or raise the limit.

### dr copies failing in the second region

Per-region quotas bite on the copy target. Manage the destination.

### snapshot quota full after months of copies

Add lifecycle rules so old copies expire.

## Why it happens

EBS snapshot quotas are per region, and cross-region DR copies accumulate in the destination without the source region's lifecycle rules applying there. Months of copies fill the destination quota silently until the next copy is rejected. The durable fix is lifecycle management in every region that receives copies, not just the source.
