Immutable solution version
fraud agent failed mid-screening burst on kount ris 429
Complete solution
Survives Kount RIS 429s during screening bursts with Retry-After handling, jittered backoff, and burst queueing. Use when a burst of screening calls gets throttled mid-run. Not for RIS authentication or schema errors.
TL;DR
Bursts trip Kount's limits fast. Honor the Retry-After header, back off with jitter, queue the burst instead of firing it all at once, and checkpoint screening progress so a throttle pause resumes cleanly.
fraud agent failed mid-screening burst on kount ris 429Use this when
- A burst of screening calls gets throttled mid-run.
- 429s cluster in the first seconds of a screening batch.
- Parallel workers retry at the same moment and extend the block.
Not for this skill when
- The RIS credentials are wrong. That fails on the first call.
- The response schema changed. That is a parsing problem.
- Single calls 429. That is a quota problem, not a burst problem.
Steps
- Read the Retry-After value on every 429 and wait at least that long. Verify: the agent never retries before the server allows.
- Add jittered exponential backoff around the retry. Verify: parallel workers do not retry in lockstep.
- Put screening requests through a queue with a fixed drain rate under your limit. Verify: bursts flatten into a steady, allowed pace.
- Checkpoint the screening position after each item. Verify: a throttled pause resumes without re-screening.
- Reduce batch concurrency permanently if 429s recur. Verify: the steady-state rate stays under the limit with headroom.
Variant phrasings

Same failure, common phrasing.
ris rate limit agent
Symptom-level search.
kount throttled mid screening
Operational wording.
Compatibility: Kount RIS API. Retry-After handling is on the client.
Why it happens
Screening bursts are the worst pattern for rate limits: dozens of requests in the first seconds of a run. Kount answers with 429, and agents that retry immediately or in lockstep turn one throttle into a sustained block. A paced queue converts the burst into the shape the API expects. Without the queue, every retry attempt rejoins the burst, so the harder the agent tries to recover, the longer the throttle lasts.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Do not catch up after a pause by doubling the drain rate. That re-triggers the limit.
- Cache recent RIS decisions for the run to cut repeat calls.
- If bursts are business-normal, talk to Kount about a limit increase instead of permanently throttling yourself.
- Log 429 rate per worker so you can see which part of the pipeline bursts.
- Separate screening traffic from interactive traffic where you can, so a burst run does not starve the live checkout path.
