## TL;DR
This error means the statement dates collide with the reconciliation calendar: the statement overlaps a period already reconciled, starts before the last rec ended, or belongs to a future period the rec has not opened. Compare the statement start and end dates to the last completed rec, clear or void the blocking draft rec if one exists, and attach the statement to the period whose end date it matches.

```text
"cannot reconcile: statement date out of range" error on the business checking account
```

## Use this when
- The statement is for the correct account but the ERP refuses it as out of range.
- A draft or abandoned reconciliation exists for an overlapping period.
- The statement period is unusual, such as a short statement after an account change.

## Not for this skill when
- The statement belongs to a different account or entity. Attach it where it belongs instead.
- The bank issued a corrected statement replacing dates already reconciled. That needs an unreconcile workflow, not a fresh attach.

## Steps
1. Note the statement start date, end date, and account from the statement itself, not the file name. Verify: the dates come from the document header
2. Open the rec history for the account and record the last reconciled-through date and any draft recs with their ranges. Verify: you can see exactly which range the new statement collides with
3. If a stale draft blocks the range, complete it if it is real work or delete it if it is an empty shell, with a note on the close checklist. Verify: no draft rec overlaps the statement range
4. Attach the statement to the rec period ending on the statement end date, adjusting the period start to the day after the last rec if the ERP allows custom ranges. Verify: the statement attaches without the range error
5. Run the rec and confirm opening balance equals the prior rec closing balance. Verify: opening balance continuity holds, proving the ranges now chain correctly

## Variant phrasings
### bank reconciliation statement date out of range fix
The direct fix phrasing.
### cannot attach bank statement reconciliation period overlap
When a draft rec is the blocker.

Compatibility: Bank rec date validation in QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, and Sage business checking reconciliations.

## Why it happens
Reconciliations are a chain: each period must start where the last ended so opening balances prove continuity. ERPs enforce the chain by rejecting statements whose dates overlap a completed link or leap past the next expected link. Short statements, changed statement days, and abandoned drafts all break the expected chain even though the statement itself is perfectly valid.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Banks sometimes issue a short statement when the account type or statement day changes. Expect a chain adjustment that month and note it for the reviewer.
- If two statements arrived for one period after a bank migration, reconcile them as one combined period rather than forcing two recs.
- Deleting a draft rec deletes its matching work. Export its matched list first if anyone invested time in it.
