Solution skill

agent failed mid user import when okta access token expired without refresh

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes long-running Okta user imports that die when the API token expires mid-run, by adding proactive refresh and resumable checkpoints. Not for imports failing on data validation, and not for Okta rate limiting.

agent failed mid user import when okta access token expired without refresh

TL;DR

The import outlived its token and had no way to get a new one. Checkpoint how many users imported before the failure, get a fresh token, add refresh logic that renews at a fraction of the token lifetime, and resume from the checkpoint skipping already-imported users. Verify the final counts match the source.

agent failed mid user import when okta access token expired without refresh

Use this when

  • An Okta user import fails partway with token or auth errors
  • The failure happens at a consistent elapsed time after start
  • Re-running the import creates duplicates

Not for this skill when

  • Import records failing validation (data problem, not tokens)
  • Okta 429 rate limiting mid-import (throttling, not expiry)
  • The import failing on the very first user (initial auth problem)

Steps

Step 1: Checkpoint the progress

Determine exactly how many users imported successfully before the failure, from Okta's records. Expected: a precise resume point.

Step 2: Get a fresh token

Refresh the OAuth grant or generate a new API token. Expected: a valid credential with a full lifetime ahead.

Step 3: Add proactive refresh

Make the importer refresh the token at a safe fraction of its lifetime, well before expiry. Expected: long runs never outlive their credential.

Step 4: Resume from the checkpoint

Restart the import skipping already-imported users. Expected: each remaining user imports exactly once.

Step 5: Verify counts

Compare imported user counts against the source file. Expected: the numbers match with no duplicates or gaps.

Tool compatibility

Okta API tokens and OAuth; bulk user import jobs; checkpoint and resume patterns.

Variant phrasings

Variant 1

okta api token expired during import

Variant 2

long running okta import token expiry

Variant 3

okta user import failed halfway token

Why it happens

API tokens have lifetimes and bulk imports have durations, and nobody compares the two until the import dies at the token's expiry with half the users created. The failure is especially damaging because the natural response, re-running the import, duplicates the users who already succeeded unless the job is idempotent. Static API tokens make this worse: unlike OAuth refresh flows, there is no built-in renewal, so the job must be short or the operator must rotate tokens mid-flight. The durable design treats the import as a resumable stream: checkpoint every record, refresh the credential proactively, and make re-runs safe by construction.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Okta API tokens and OAuth tokens have different lifetimes; know which one the job uses.
  • Token lifetime policies set by admins can be shorter than the documented defaults; check the actual policy.
  • Idempotency keys on user creation turn a scary re-run into a safe no-op; prefer APIs that support them.
