## TL;DR
An ISO-8583 authorization message arrives with a bad bitmap or a truncated field and the agent's parser throws, killing the whole batch. Fix: validate the bitmap before reading any field, enforce length prefixes on variable fields, and quarantine malformed messages with the raw bytes preserved. One bad message must never stop the stream.

```text
fraud agent failed on malformed iso-8583 authorization message
```

## Use this when
- The parser throws on specific authorization messages.
- A batch dies partway through with a parse error.
- A processor starts sending a field layout you have not seen.

## Not for this skill when
- Well-formed messages fail business validation. That is a data quality path, not parsing.
- The connection to the processor drops. That is transport, not format.

## Steps
1. Capture the raw message bytes that failed. Verify: you can replay the exact bytes into the parser locally.
2. Validate the bitmap first: primary bitmap always, secondary when bit one is set. Verify: a corrupt bitmap is rejected before any field is read.
3. Enforce length prefixes on variable-length fields and bounds-check every fixed field. Verify: a truncated field raises a parse error instead of a silent misread.
4. Quarantine malformed messages: store the raw bytes plus the parse error, alert once, and continue the stream. Verify: the consumer keeps processing after a bad message.
5. Log a field map on failure: which fields parsed before the error and where it broke. Verify: the log gives the processor exactly what was malformed.

## Variant phrasings
### iso 8583 parse error
Common phrasing.
### malformed authorization message
Format-focused search.
### iso8583 bitmap invalid
Bitmap-focused phrasing.
### iso8583 field shift parse failure
Field-shift focused phrasing.

Compatibility: any ISO-8583 parser; the message format is the standard while field definitions vary by processor spec.

## Why it happens
ISO-8583 is a positional format, so one corrupt length prefix shifts every field after it. Parsers that assume well-formed input turn a single bad message into a crashed consumer.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Processor-specific private fields need a per-processor field table, not one hardcoded layout.
- Messages that parse but fail business validation go down the data-quality path, not the parse-error path.
- Replaying quarantined messages after a parser fix needs idempotency so nothing is double-counted; replay into a staging consumer first.
