Solution skill

agent failed to reconnect to host after scheduled reboot

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes a patch agent failing to reconnect to a host after its scheduled reboot, where the agent either probes too early and marks the host dead, or the host comes back with a changed address or a still-starting management service. Use when post-reboot reconnection failures are common in waves. Not for hosts that fail to boot.

TL;DR

Post-reboot reconnection is a race the agent must expect to lose at first: the host network returns before the management service, DHCP can move the address, and host keys or agent certificates may need the host fully up. Build a reconnection loop that resolves the host fresh from inventory (not a cached IP), probes in stages with generous total budget, and distinguishes still-rebooting from failed-to-boot by escalating only after the budget with console evidence requested.

agent failed to reconnect to host after scheduled reboot

Use this when

  • Hosts are marked failed at the reconnect step but are healthy when checked minutes later.
  • Cloud or DHCP environments show address changes after reboot.
  • The management service (sshd, WinRM) starts late relative to network up.

Not for this skill when

  • The host never returns and console shows a boot failure. That is a boot incident, not a reconnection race.
  • The agent credentials stopped working after reboot (for example a service account issue). That is auth, surfaced at reconnect but fixed elsewhere.

Steps

  1. Log the timeline on failures: reboot issued, first network answer, first management answer, agent verdict. Verify: the gap the agent must bridge is measured, per host class
  2. Resolve the target address fresh at reconnect time from the inventory or DNS, never from the pre-reboot cache. Verify: a host whose address changed reconnects without manual help
  3. Probe in stages (network, then management port, then authenticated exec) with retries across a total budget sized to the measured distribution plus margin. Verify: no stage failure inside the budget marks the host failed
  4. On budget expiry, mark reboot-unconfirmed (not failed), attach the stage reached, and queue one later retry plus a human console check. Verify: the state is distinct in the tracker and the retry happens
  5. Track reconnect duration per host as a metric. Verify: the wave report shows the distribution and the outliers get investigated as host problems

Variant phrasings

agent cannot reconnect after reboot probes too early

The timing phrasing.

host ip changed after reboot dhcp agent reconnect inventory

The address-change phrasing.

post reboot staged probe network winrm sshd order

The staging phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: SSH and WinRM managed hosts, cloud and on-prem; inventory must expose current addresses.

Why it happens

Reconnection fails at the seams between systems: the inventory address is stale, the network is up but the daemon is not, the host is applying the very update the agent installed and takes three times its normal boot. An agent that treats the first failed probe as a verdict manufactures failures out of ordinary variance. The staged, budgeted, state-aware loop converts variance back into waiting, which is all most of these hosts ever needed.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Windows hosts applying large updates at boot (the configuring updates phase) can answer the network while refusing management for many minutes; the budget must include that phase for patch reboots specifically.
  • If a host class consistently lands at the budget edge, that is a boot performance problem worth its own fix, not a bigger budget forever.
  • Keep the pre-reboot and post-reboot host identity check (hostname or machine ID) after reconnect; an address reused by a different host must not silently receive the next steps.
