## TL;DR

PDF export usually fails on oversized reports: too many high-resolution receipts in one file. Export in a smaller date range or with fewer attachments, or download the receipts separately; the export then completes.

## Error

```text
expense report pdf export failed
```

## Steps

1. Note the report size: number of expenses and attached receipts. Expected: a large report with many image attachments.
2. Try exporting a smaller slice: filter to a shorter date range or fewer expenses. Expected: the smaller export succeeds, confirming size is the cause.
3. Compress the largest receipt images (resize to about 2000 pixels on the long edge) and retry the full export. Expected: the full report exports.
4. If the tool offers it, export with a "summary" option that links receipts instead of embedding them. Expected: a small PDF with receipt references.
5. As a fallback, export the expense list as CSV and download key receipts individually. Expected: you have auditable records even without the combined PDF.

## When to use

- PDF export of an expense report fails, times out, or produces a corrupt file.
- The report has many high-resolution receipt attachments.

## When not to use

- A single receipt will not upload (see the attachment skills).
- The export succeeds but the content is wrong (check report filters).

## Tool compatibility

- Expensify, Concur, and most expense tools with PDF report export.

## Variant phrasings

### Could not generate report PDF

Same failure, alternate wording.

### PDF export timed out

The large-report form of the same problem.

## Why it happens

Report PDFs embed every receipt image. Dozens of full-resolution phone photos make a file too large for the export worker, which times out or crashes.
