## TL;DR
The dashboard dies exactly when you need it: dispute spikes hammer the same backend the dashboard reads, and the 502s start. Decouple it: serve the dashboard from cached aggregates refreshed on a schedule, not from live queries against the hot database. During a spike the numbers lag by minutes, but they load, which beats a 502 every time.

```text
fraud agent dashboard fetch failed with 502 during dispute spike
```

## Use this when
- Dashboards 502 or time out during traffic spikes.
- The dashboard queries the production database directly.
- The agent cannot fetch the metrics it needs to triage.

## Not for this skill when
- The dashboard is slow all the time. That is a query optimization problem.
- The 502 comes from the agent's own service. Check the agent first.

## Steps
1. Move dashboard reads to precomputed aggregates refreshed every few minutes. Verify: the dashboard loads in under two seconds during a load test.
2. Put a cache in front: the agent and the UI read the same cached aggregates. Verify: a spike in dashboard traffic does not touch the database, measured at the query log.
3. Degrade gracefully: if the refresh lags, show the last good snapshot with its timestamp. Verify: a staged refresh failure shows stale data labeled as stale, not an error.
4. Alert on refresh lag itself: if aggregates go stale past the SLA, page. Verify: a stuck refresh job pages before anyone opens the dashboard and sees stale numbers.

## Variant phrasings
### dashboard 502 under load
Error phrasing.
### metrics unavailable during dispute surge
Availability phrasing.
### agent cannot fetch dashboard metrics
Agent-impact phrasing.

Compatibility: Works with any dashboard stack. The aggregate-cache pattern is independent of the visualization tool.

## Why it happens
Dashboards are built against the transactional database because it is easy, and they work fine at normal load. The dispute spike is the first real load test, and the database falls over under dashboard queries plus dispute writes at once.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Stale aggregates can mislead triage. Always show the snapshot timestamp.
- Some metrics cannot be precomputed. Keep a slow live path for those, with its own timeout.
- Cache invalidation on incident resolution matters. Force a refresh when a dispute closes.
- The agent should prefer the cache too, or its own polling becomes the load problem.
