Solution skill

agent recommended ARM migration without checking the driver's x86-only dependency

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes an ARM migration recommendation that ignores x86-only dependencies by adding an architecture-compatibility check. Use when a migration recommendation misses a hard x86 dependency. Not for workloads already validated on ARM.

TL;DR

The agent recommended moving to Graviton for the price-performance win without checking that the workload depends on an x86-only driver or binary, which would break on ARM. Add a compatibility gate: inventory binaries, drivers, and containers for architecture-specific dependencies before recommending migration, and only recommend ARM where the stack is verified compatible. The discount is irrelevant if the workload cannot run.

Error

agent recommended ARM migration without checking the driver's x86-only dependency

Steps

  1. Inventory the workload's architecture-sensitive components: kernel drivers, native binaries, and container base images. Expected: the x86-only dependency is identified.
  2. Check each component for ARM builds or equivalents. Expected: the compatibility verdict per component.
  3. If any hard dependency lacks an ARM version, reject the migration recommendation for that workload. Expected: the recommendation is withdrawn or scoped to compatible parts.
  4. Add the compatibility check to the agent's migration logic as a precondition. Expected: future recommendations include the gate.
  5. For compatible workloads, proceed with a canary migration and validate performance. Expected: the migration is proven, not assumed.

When to use

  • An ARM migration recommendation ignores architecture dependencies.
  • The workload uses kernel drivers or native binaries.
  • Validating migration recommendations.

When not to use

  • The stack is already verified on ARM.
  • The workload is interpreted code with no native dependencies.
  • The migration is to a different x86 family.

Tool compatibility

AWS Graviton, EC2 (current 2026 releases). Applies to migration-recommendation agents.

Why it happens

ARM's price-performance advantage makes it the default recommendation for cost agents, but the recommendation is only valid when the software stack runs on ARM. Drivers and native binaries are the hard blockers: they cannot be recompiled by the user and have no ARM equivalent. The agent optimized the price dimension while skipping the feasibility dimension. Compatibility gating makes feasibility a precondition, not an afterthought.
