Solution skill

dbt debug fails on connection profile

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes dbt debug connection failures: profile targeting, credential problems, and network reachability from where dbt runs. Use when dbt debug reports a connection failure. Not for models failing after a successful debug.

TL;DR

dbt debug tests the profile end to end, so a failure names the layer: wrong target, bad credentials, or the warehouse being unreachable from this machine. Read which check failed in the debug output and fix that layer. A green debug does not guarantee models run, but a red debug guarantees they will not.

dbt debug fails on connection profile

Use this when

  • dbt debug fails on the connection check.
  • It worked before a credential rotation or network change.
  • A new team member cannot connect but others can.

Not for this skill when

  • dbt debug is green but models fail. That is a model or warehouse problem.
  • You need a new profile from scratch. Check the adapter docs.

Steps

  1. Run dbt debug and read exactly which check failed: profile, connection, or credentials. Note the failing check. Verify: the failing layer is named
  2. Verify the target name matches the profile entry you intend, including --target overrides. Note the active target. Verify: the right profile entry is tested
  3. Test the credentials directly with the warehouse's own client from the same machine. Note whether they work outside dbt. Verify: credentials versus network is separated
  4. Check network reachability: VPN, firewall rules, and IP allowlists for this machine's address. Note the path is open. Verify: the network path is confirmed
  5. Fix the layer that failed and re-run dbt debug until all checks pass. Note every check is green. Verify: the profile is verified

Variant phrasings

dbt debug connection failed

The shortened search.

dbt profile target not working

The target-shaped phrasing.

Compatibility: dbt Core 1.x, all adapters. dbt debug output format is stable; each adapter adds its own checks.

Why it happens

dbt debug runs a fixed sequence: parse the profile, resolve the target, open a connection, run a trivial query. Each step isolates one layer, which is why reading the output beats guessing. Most failures are mundane: the wrong target selected, a rotated password nobody updated in profiles.yml, or a new laptop whose IP is not allowlisted. The debug output already tells you which; people just do not read past the first red line.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • profiles.yml in the wrong location (not ~/.dbt or --profiles-dir) makes debug test a different profile than your runs use. Confirm the path.
  • Environment-variable credentials that are empty strings fail differently from missing ones. Check for empties, not just presence.
  • SSO-based warehouses can require a browser flow that headless CI cannot complete. Use service credentials in CI.
  • A green debug on your laptop says nothing about the CI runner's network. Debug in CI when CI is where it fails.
