tabula 'java not found' error on earnings pdf table extraction

Complete solution

This skill fixes tabula 'java not found' errors in earnings PDF pipelines. It diagnoses the pipeline-process PATH gap and offers a pure-Python extractor fallback when Java cannot be installed.

TL;DR

Tabula shells out to Java, so 'java not found' means the JVM is missing from the PATH of the process running your pipeline, even if Java is installed for your user. Install a JRE and point tabula at it explicitly, or switch to a pure-Python extractor like pdfplumber for the same tables.

The error

FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'java'
tabula.io failed: Java is required to run tabula. Please install Java and ensure it is on your PATH.

Fix it

  1. Check which java the pipeline process sees by running the same command the pipeline runs, for example python -c with shutil.which('java'). Do not trust your login shell's PATH. Expected: Expected: which returns None in the pipeline context, confirming the PATH gap.

  2. Install a headless JRE in the pipeline environment and verify the pipeline process can invoke java -version. Expected: Expected: the version string prints from inside the pipeline process, not just your shell.

  3. If you cannot install Java (locked-down container), replace tabula with pdfplumber's extract_table for bordered tables or camelot's lattice mode. Expected: Expected: the same earnings tables extract without any JVM dependency.

  4. Pin the chosen extractor in the pipeline config and add a startup check that fails fast with a clear message if the dependency is missing. Expected: Expected: future environment changes surface as a clear startup error, not a mid-run crash.

When to use

  • Your earnings PDF pipeline crashes on tabula with a Java error.
  • You need to decide between installing Java and switching extractors.
  • You deploy the pipeline to containers where the JVM may not exist.

When not to use

  • Java is installed and on the PATH but tabula still fails - that is a tabula version issue, not this error.
  • The PDF has no bordered tables - then a lattice extractor is the wrong tool anyway.
  • You need tabula's exact output format - then installing Java is the only path.

Why it happens

Tabula is a Java program with a Python wrapper. The wrapper calls the java binary directly, so it inherits the subprocess PATH, which in cron jobs, containers, and agent sandboxes is often minimal. Your interactive shell finding java proves nothing about the pipeline process.

Variant phrasings

tabula java not found error

Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.

tabula-py requires java fix

Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.

Edge cases

  • Some base images ship a JRE under a nonstandard path like /usr/lib/jvm without linking it into PATH.
  • tabula-py needs Java 8 or newer; ancient system Javas can fail with a different cryptic error.
