## TL;DR
A 500 during trial signup means the account was created but the workspace around it was not: the database row exists while the workspace, default project, or starter data failed halfway. The fix: find the failing step in your server logs, make provisioning transactional or at least idempotent, and give the user a retry that resumes instead of starting over. Patch the half-created accounts first, then fix the code path.

## The error
```text
POST /api/signup returned 500 Internal Server Error
"Trial workspace provisioning failed"
```

## Steps
1. Reproduce with a test signup and tail the server logs. Expected output: one exception with a stack trace pointing at a specific provisioning step (workspace insert, seed data, default team).
2. Check for half-created accounts. Query for users created in the signup window with no workspace attached. Expected output: a list of stuck accounts, usually small.
3. Repair the stuck accounts. Run the provisioning steps for exactly those accounts, or delete them so the user can sign up clean. Expected output: every recent signup has a complete workspace.
4. Make provisioning a transaction or a resumable job. Wrap the steps so a failure rolls back, or record progress per step and resume. Expected output: a failed signup leaves no half-created state.
5. Add an alert on signup 500s. Expected output: the next failure pages someone instead of silently stranding users.

## When to use
- New signups see a 500 or a generic error right after submitting the form
- Support tickets say "I signed up but my workspace is empty or missing"
- The failure started after a deploy that touched signup or onboarding

## When not to use
- Signup shows a validation message (bad email, weak password): that is a 4xx, fix the message not the provisioner
- The user never gets the verification email: check the email pipeline
- Existing users hit 500s elsewhere: different problem, different logs

## Tool compatibility
Any SaaS signup flow with multi-step provisioning: relational databases with or without transactions, background job queues, and seed-data scripts. The pattern is the same whether the workspace is a database row, a cloud tenant, or a set of default objects.

## Variant phrasings
### signup 500 error saas
Provisioning failed halfway; look for partial state.
### trial account stuck after signup
The account exists but the workspace does not.
### workspace creation failed onboarding
Resume, do not restart, the provisioning steps.
### new user sees error after registering
Check server logs at the exact signup timestamp.

## Why it happens
Signup is rarely one write. It creates a user, a workspace, membership rows, a default project, and seed data, often across services. If step three of five throws (a unique-constraint clash on a slug, a downstream service timeout, a migration that renamed a column), the user sees a 500 while the earlier steps are already committed. Retrying the signup then fails differently ("email already taken"), which convinces everyone the bug is in validation. The real bug is that provisioning is neither atomic nor resumable.

## Edge cases
- Race on workspace slugs: two signups with the same company name collide. Generate slugs with a suffix instead of failing.
- Provisioning calls a third party (email, analytics) synchronously: move those out of the request path so their outages cannot 500 your signup.
- The 500 is intermittent: look for a flaky downstream call with no retry, not a code bug.
- Data-residency routing: the failure may be region-specific. Check logs per region, not just globally.
