new relic error: no data appearing for the application - how to troubleshoot

Complete solution

Troubleshoots New Relic APM showing no data by validating the agent install, license key, and network path. Use when the app runs but the APM UI is empty. Key trigger: agent installed, zero data in New Relic.

new relic error: no data appearing for the application - how to troubleshoot

TL;DR

No data means the agent is not reporting: wrong or missing license key, the agent never attached to the process, or outbound traffic to New Relic is blocked. Verify the key, confirm the agent loaded in the process, then test the network path to the collector.

New Relic APM: no data appearing for the application

Steps

  1. Confirm the license key is present and correct in the agent config (newrelic.yml, env var, or agent config). Expected: The key matches the account and has no stray whitespace.

  2. Verify the agent actually loaded: check the agent log (newrelic_agent.log) for a successful connect and reporting lines. Expected: The log shows the agent connected to the collector.

  3. Check that the process was started with the agent attached (javaagent flag, require hook, or auto-instrumentation). A restart without the flag is the classic silent failure. Expected: The agent log exists and is fresh.

  4. Test the network path: the agent needs outbound HTTPS to the New Relic collector; proxies and egress firewalls are the usual blockers. Expected: Connectivity succeeds or you find the block.

  5. Wait out the delay: new apps can take a few minutes to appear; if the log shows successful harvests and the UI is still empty after 10 minutes, check the account and app name for typos. Expected: Data appears under the exact app name the agent reports.

When to use

  • the agent is installed but APM shows no data
  • data stopped after a redeploy
  • the agent log shows connection failures

When not to use

  • data appears but is wrong (instrumentation issue, not connectivity)
  • the issue is browser or mobile monitoring (different agents)
  • the account itself is suspended (check billing first)

Tool compatibility

  • New Relic APM agents (Java, .NET, Node, Python, Ruby, Go, PHP)
  • collector endpoints vary by region (US/EU)

Variant phrasings

  • "new relic no data appearing application"
  • "new relic agent not reporting"
  • "new relic apm empty no transactions"

Why it happens

The agent must authenticate with a license key, attach to the running process, and reach the collector over HTTPS. Any of the three failing produces the same empty UI. The agent log distinguishes them: auth errors, missing attach, or network timeouts each log differently.

Edge cases

  • EU accounts need the EU collector endpoint; a US endpoint with an EU key silently reports nowhere
  • app name mismatches split data across two app entries; check for a duplicate with zero data
  • high-security mode disables some data types; empty custom attributes with HS mode on is expected
