ModuleNotFoundError: No module named '_cffi_backend'
Explains why importing PyNaCl can throw ModuleNotFoundError: No module named '_cffi_backend' and how to fix it by installing or reinstalling cffi. Use when nacl itself imports but its native backend chain fails. Not for missing libsodium errors.
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'cffibackend'
TL;DR: PyNaCl needs cffi's compiled backend and it is missing or broken in your environment. Run pip install --force-reinstall cffi pynacl and the nacl import chain works again.
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named '_cffi_backend'The fix
- Reinstall the backend chain:
pip install --force-reinstall cffi pynacl- Verify:
python -c "import nacl.bindings; print('ok')"Expected output: ok.

When this applies
- The traceback goes through nacl imports and ends at cffibackend.
- cffi was recently uninstalled, upgraded, or never fully installed (no wheels, failed build).
- Minimal or distroless containers missing build tooling.
When it does NOT apply
- The error mentions libsodium.so, which is the system libsodium library missing, a different fix.
- Plain
No module named 'nacl', which means PyNaCl itself is not installed.
Why this happens
cffi ships a Python part and a compiled cffibackend part. If only the pure-Python half is present (botched uninstall, stray files, or a source install without a compiler), anything built on cffi, including PyNaCl, fails at import with this error. Force-reinstalling both packages guarantees matched halves.
Compatibility
PyNaCl 1.4+, cffi 1.15+. On Windows and macOS use binary wheels; on minimal Linux images you may need a compiler for a source build.
