# wrangler pages functions: _routes.json too many rules

## Steps

   Expected: One rule serves many paths.

4. Redeploy and confirm the rule count.
   Expected: The deploy succeeds.

5. Keep the route list minimal by policy; review additions.
   Expected: The limit is respected going forward.

## Why it happens

Pages generates routing rules from the Functions directory, and the platform caps them. A file-per-endpoint layout that felt organized becomes 200 rules. Wildcards and in-function routing compress the rule set without losing endpoints.

## Edge cases

- the generated file is what counts; inspect it, not your mental model
- excludes also cost rules; audit those too
- the limit is per deployment; cleaning once is not enough
