Bing Webmaster Tools setup and first checks

Export

Walks agents through Bing Webmaster Tools setup: verification, sitemap submission, and the first health checks to run. Use it when adding Bing coverage alongside Google, or when Bing traffic matters to the audience. Not for Google Search Console tasks.

TL;DR

Bing Webmaster Tools setup takes ten minutes: verify ownership (import it from Google Search Console if you can), submit your sitemap, and run the first checks on indexing, crawl errors, and SEO issues. Bing powers its own search plus DuckDuckGo and Ecosia, so this is one setup for three audiences. Do it once, then check it monthly; Bing is lower-maintenance than Google.

Bing Webmaster Tools setup and first checks

Use this when

  • You have Google Search Console set up but no Bing coverage
  • Your audience includes DuckDuckGo or Ecosia users
  • You want IndexNow verification and URL submission for Bing
  • You are launching a new site and want both major indexes from day one

Not for this skill when

  • You need Google data (that is Search Console, separate tool)
  • Bing drives negligible traffic for your niche and you have higher priorities
  • You need rank tracking (Webmaster Tools shows some, but it is not a tracker)

Steps

  1. Verify the site. Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools and add the site; the fastest path is importing from Google Search Console, which verifies instantly. Expected: the property shows as verified.
Fastest: "Import from Google Search Console" during setup.
Alternative: XML file upload, meta tag, or DNS record.
  1. Submit your sitemap. Add the sitemap index URL under Sitemaps. Expected: Bing discovers your URL set without waiting for crawls.
Sitemaps section: submit the sitemap index URL.
Check back in a few days for the discovered-URL count.
  1. Check the index summary. Look at indexed vs submitted counts and the crawl stats. Expected: a baseline of how much of your site Bing has.
First checks: indexed pages count, crawl errors, pages blocked by robots.
  1. Run the SEO reports. Bing's SEO analyzer flags concrete issues per page: titles, descriptions, headings, markup. Expected: a fix list, often including things Google never mentions.
SEO Reports: run against key templates.
Fix the high-severity items first; they are usually title and heading issues.
  1. Set up the monthly routine. Check index coverage, crawl errors, and search performance once a month. Expected: Bing stays healthy with minimal effort.
Monthly: coverage trend, new crawl errors, top queries.
Pair with IndexNow pings on publish for freshness.

How to verify site on Bing Webmaster Tools

Import from Search Console is fastest; XML file or DNS record work too.

Submit sitemap to Bing

Sitemaps section, paste the index URL, watch the discovered count.

Is Bing Webmaster Tools worth it

If any of your audience uses Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia, yes, and setup is ten minutes.

Why it happens

Bing is the index behind several search engines, but most site owners only set up Google's tools, so Bing-specific problems (blocked crawls, missing sitemaps, markup it dislikes) go unnoticed for years. The setup is quick because Bing lets you piggyback on Google verification, and the ongoing cost is low because Bing's crawl is less aggressive. It is the highest ROI-per-minute SEO task for sites that skipped it.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • The GSC import sometimes fails on properties with unusual verification; fall back to the XML file method.
  • Bing's crawler is slower than Google's; give new sitemaps a week before judging coverage.
  • Disavow and URL removal tools exist in Bing too, but the interfaces differ from Google's; dont assume parity.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools data also lags a few days, like GSC.
  • If Bing shows zero indexed pages after two weeks, check robots.txt and the crawl-error report before assuming a penalty.
