## TL;DR
Check the asset's lifecycle status, not just its existence, before acting. Query the current status from the CMDB, confirm the device is still active in the MDM, and reconcile the two when they disagree.

## Steps
1. Include the asset lifecycle status in every lookup the agent performs.
Expected: Retired and disposed assets are visible as such.
2. Cross-check the device against the MDM's active inventory.
Expected: A device missing from the MDM is treated as suspect.
3. When the CMDB and MDM disagree, flag the record for reconciliation instead of acting.
Expected: The agent does not act on disputed data.
4. Run a periodic reconciliation that retires CMDB records for devices long gone from the MDM.
   Expected: Stale records decay automatically.

## When to use
- The agent looks up assets to guide support actions
- Actions were taken against retired hardware
- The CMDB is updated manually and lags reality

## When not to use
- The CMDB is the system of record and always current
- The agent only reads asset data for reporting
- A human verifies the asset before any action

## Why this happens
CMDBs are updated by process, and processes get skipped during rushed offboardings and hardware swaps. The MDM knows the live truth, so an agent that trusts only the CMDB happily troubleshoots a laptop that was recycled months ago.

## Edge cases
- Loaner pool devices churn fast and are the top source of stale records.
- Reconciliation needs a grace period so a temporarily offline device is not retired.
