Immutable solution version

stripe customer portal return_url invalid error

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes Stripe customer portal session creation failing on an invalid return_url, by passing a valid absolute HTTPS URL. Not for portal configuration errors in the dashboard, and not for authentication failures.

Instructions

stripe customer portal return_url invalid error

TL;DR

Stripe validates return_url strictly: it must be an absolute HTTPS URL. Check the value your code sends for relatives, http scheme, or encoding issues, fix it to a proper https URL, re-create the portal session, and test the full round trip back to your site.

stripe customer portal return_url invalid error

Use this when

  • Creating a Stripe billing portal session fails on return_url
  • The error appeared after changing the return destination
  • Portal works in test mode but fails in live mode

Not for this skill when

  • Portal configuration errors in the Stripe dashboard (products, features)
  • Stripe API authentication failures
  • Customers not reaching the portal at all (link generation issue)

Steps

Step 1: Inspect the return_url value

Log the exact return_url your code sends to the portal session API. Expected: you see the literal value Stripe rejected.

Step 2: Make it absolute HTTPS

Fix it to a complete https URL with no relative paths and correct encoding. Expected: the URL is valid and reachable.

Step 3: Re-create the session

Call the portal session API again with the fixed URL. Expected: the session is created with a portal URL.

Step 4: Test the round trip

Open the portal, then use its return link. Expected: the customer lands back on your site at the return URL.

Step 5: Check per-environment values

Confirm staging and production each send their own correct return URL. Expected: no environment sends another's URL.

Tool compatibility

Stripe Billing customer portal; portal session API; return URL configuration.

Variant 3

stripe portal invalid return_url fix

Why it happens

The customer portal is hosted by Stripe, so the return_url is the only bridge back to your application, and Stripe validates it strictly to prevent open-redirect abuse. The failures are always mundane: a relative path, an http URL in production, a loopback value leaking from development config, or characters that needed encoding. Test mode is lenient about loopback addresses, which is why the bug ships: it works in testing and fails the first time a real customer finishes in the portal. Logging the exact sent value exposes the problem instantly.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Loopback return URLs work in test mode but never in live mode; keep them out of production config.
  • URL length limits apply; deeply nested return paths can get rejected.
  • The return URL should land on a page that refreshes subscription state, not a cached page.
