chargebee metered billing usage sync failed
Fixes Chargebee metered billing usage records failing to sync, by validating item references and payload format and replaying the failed period. Not for subscription creation failures, and not for invoice generation errors on valid usage.
chargebee metered billing usage sync failed
TL;DR
Usage sync fails when the item price IDs do not match Chargebee or the payload format is wrong. Find the failed sync in your job logs or Chargebee events, verify the subscription and metered item references, fix the payload, and re-run the sync for the failed period. Confirm the usage appears on the subscription before the invoice runs.
chargebee metered billing usage sync failedUse this when
- Metered usage never appears on Chargebee subscriptions
- The sync job logs show API errors for usage records
- Invoices go out with zero usage despite real consumption
Not for this skill when
- Subscription creation or plan change failures (different API area)
- Invoice PDF or delivery problems on correct usage
- Usage syncing fine but priced wrong (check the item price)
Steps
Step 1: Find the failed sync
Locate the failure in your sync job logs or Chargebee's event stream, noting the subscription and period. Expected: you know exactly which usage records failed and why.
Step 2: Verify item references
Confirm the metered item and price IDs in your payload match Chargebee exactly. Expected: every reference resolves to a real Chargebee item.
Step 3: Fix the payload format
Check quantity types, timestamps, and required fields against Chargebee's usage API. Expected: the payload matches the documented format.
Step 4: Replay the failed period
Re-run the sync for the affected period only. Expected: the usage records are accepted.
Step 5: Confirm before invoicing
Verify the usage shows on the subscription ahead of the billing run. Expected: the next invoice includes the correct usage.
Tool compatibility
Chargebee metered billing (usage API); Chargebee events and subscriptions; sync job logging.
Variant phrasings
Variant 1
chargebee metered billing usage not syncing
Variant 2
chargebee usage records api error
Variant 3
chargebee unbilled usage sync failed
Why it happens
Metered billing splits the money flow into two steps that must agree: your system meters consumption, and Chargebee prices it at invoice time. The sync between them fails on the boring details, an item price ID renamed in Chargebee but not in your code, timestamps in the wrong timezone, or quantities sent as strings. Because usage only matters at invoice time, the failure hides for weeks until an invoice goes out at zero and finance notices. Treating the sync as a reconciled pipeline, with alerts on failures and a replay path for missed periods, catches it while the period is still open.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Backfilling usage for closed periods may need credit notes instead of edits; check the billing rules.
- Timezone mismatches on usage timestamps push consumption into the wrong billing period.
- Make usage record submission idempotent so replays never double-count.
