how to disavow or remove bad backlinks

Complete solution

Covers dealing with bad backlinks: when to disavow, when to request removal, and when to do nothing. Use it when a site has spammy links or a manual action. Not for routine link building.

TL;DR

Most bad backlinks should be ignored: Google is good at discounting spammy links automatically, and disavowing is only for manual actions or clear negative-SEO attacks. The order is: audit the links, try removal for the worst offenders, disavow only if there is a manual action or an obvious attack, and otherwise leave them alone. Disavow is a scalpel for penalties, not routine hygiene.

how to disavow or remove bad backlinks

Use this when

  • Search Console shows a manual action for unnatural links
  • You see a sudden spike of obvious spam links (negative SEO)
  • You inherited a domain with a toxic link history
  • You are doing a link audit and need to decide what to do about junk links

Not for this skill when

  • You just have some low-quality links and no penalty (ignore them)
  • You want to build links (different skill)
  • Rankings dropped without a manual action (look elsewhere first)

Steps

  1. Audit the link profile. Pull backlinks from Search Console and a link index tool, and flag the suspicious ones: link farms, hacked sites, irrelevant foreign-language spam, paid-link footprints. Expected: a list of genuinely bad links, not just weak ones.
Flag: obvious spam networks, hacked-page injections, paid link schemes.
Dont flag: low-authority blogs, directories, forum links, old press.
  1. Check for a manual action. Look in Search Console under Security and Manual Actions. Expected: you know whether Google has actually penalized the links.
If manual action exists: disavow is on the table.
If not: the default is to do nothing.
  1. Request removal for the worst offenders. Contact site owners for clear spam or hacked links pointing at you. Expected: a low success rate, but documented effort helps reconsideration requests.
Template: short, polite, identifies the URL and the linking page.
Log every request and response for the record.
  1. Disavow only with cause. Upload a disavow file for the domains you could not remove, only when there is a manual action or a clear attack. Expected: a minimal, documented disavow file.
Disavow file: one domain per line, comments explaining each.
Keep it minimal: disavow domains, not individual URLs, for spam networks.
  1. File reconsideration if penalized. After cleanup and disavow, submit a reconsideration request documenting what you did. Expected: the manual action lifted, usually within weeks.
Reconsideration: what you found, what you removed, what you disavowed,
and what prevents recurrence.

Variant phrasings

Should I disavow spammy backlinks

Almost always no, unless there is a manual action or an obvious attack.

How to remove bad backlinks

Request removal from the linking site first; disavow is the fallback for penalties.

Negative SEO attack what to do

Document the spike, disavow the attacking domains, and monitor; Google usually discounts it on its own.

Why it happens

Google's link algorithms have gotten good at ignoring spam links without penalizing the target, because penalizing recipients would make negative SEO trivially effective. Manual actions for links are now rare and usually tied to the site's own link schemes, not inbound spam. The disavow tool survives for the exceptional cases, but routine disavowing mostly risks removing links that were actually helping.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Disavowing good links by mistake hurts; when in doubt, leave it out of the file.
  • The disavow file is a suggestion processed over weeks; it is not instant.
  • Paid links you built yourself are your responsibility to clean up; document the cleanup.
  • A rankings drop without a manual action is almost never a link problem; dont disavow as a first resort.
  • Keep the disavow file under version control with comments; future-you needs to know why each line exists.
