fivetran quota exceeded error, syncs blocked

Export

Handles Fivetran quota-exceeded errors blocking syncs: which quota, usage attribution, and getting syncs moving again. Use when syncs are blocked on quota. Not for source-side API quotas.

TL;DR

Fivetran quotas cover rows synced or connector usage against your plan, and exceeding them pauses syncs until the quota resets or the plan changes. Check usage by connector in the dashboard to find the hog, then cut waste: descope unused tables, lower frequency, or upgrade the plan. Syncs resume when usage drops under the limit or billing catches up.

fivetran quota exceeded error, syncs blocked

Use this when

  • Syncs are blocked with a quota exceeded error.
  • Usage spiked recently.
  • New connectors or tables were added this billing period.

Not for this skill when

  • The source API returns 429. That is the source's quota, not Fivetran's.
  • Syncs are slow but running. That is performance, not quota.

Steps

  1. Open the usage dashboard and attribute consumption by connector and table. Note the biggest consumers. Verify: the hog is identified
  2. Check what changed this period: new tables, higher frequency, backfills. Note the driver. Verify: the spike is explained
  3. Cut waste: descope tables nobody queries, drop frequency on slow-moving data. Note the reduced footprint. Verify: usage is under control
  4. If the usage is legitimate, upgrade the plan or buy the add-on. Note the new limit. Verify: the limit fits the workload
  5. Confirm syncs resume and set a usage alert below the limit. Note the alert is configured. Verify: the next spike is visible early

Variant phrasings

fivetran usage limit reached

The paraphrase.

fivetran MAR overage

The billing-shaped search.

Compatibility: Fivetran plans with usage-based quotas. Dashboard usage views are available on all plans.

Why it happens

Usage-based pricing means sync volume is money, and quotas are the guardrail. Spikes almost always come from scope creep: a table added for one question that syncs forever, a frequency bumped during an incident and never restored, a backfill that re-synced history. The dashboard attributes usage precisely, which makes this a prioritization problem: every table's sync cost should be defensible against someone actually querying it.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Deleted tables keep counting until the connector is reconfigured. Removing the table from the source is not enough; descope it in Fivetran.
  • Backfills and re-syncs consume quota like normal syncs. Budget them before triggering.
  • Quota resets are on the billing cycle, not the calendar month. Know your reset date when planning catch-up syncs.
  • Some plans pool quota across connectors. One greedy connector can block all the others.
