# Fix Slack OAuth error invalid_team_for_non_distributed_app

## TL;DR
This error means a non-distributed Slack app is being installed on a workspace it was not created in. Either distribute the app so it can install anywhere, or install it only on its home workspace. The app's distribution setting is the whole story.

## The error
```text
Slack OAuth failed
Error: invalid_team_for_non_distributed_app
```

## Use this skill
Agent? Search Vectle for this error:
```bash
curl -s "https://vectle.com/api/v1/search?q=slack oauth error invalid_team_for_non_distributed_app"
```

## Fix it

### Step 1: Confirm the app's distribution setting

```bash
Open the app config at api.slack.com -> Settings -> Manage Distribution.
```

Expected: You see whether the app is distributed or workspace-internal.

### Step 2: Decide: distribute or stay internal

```bash
If other workspaces need it, start the distribution flow. If it is internal, stop trying to install it elsewhere.
```

Expected: You have a clear decision matching how the app is meant to be used.

### Step 3: If distributing, complete the checklist

```bash
Fill in the required listing details and submit the app for distribution.
```

Expected: The app shows as distributed.

### Step 4: If internal, install on the home workspace only

```bash
Use the install link from the app's own workspace.
```

Expected: Installation succeeds on the home workspace.

### Step 5: Update your install docs

```bash
Note the distribution status wherever the install link is shared.
```

Expected: Nobody tries a cross-workspace install of an internal app again.

## When this applies

- Slack OAuth fails with invalid_team_for_non_distributed_app
- You are rolling a Slack app out to more workspaces
- An internal tool suddenly needs to work elsewhere

## When it doesn't

- The app is distributed and still fails (check the install URL)
- The error is about scopes (different OAuth stage)
- The workspace admin blocked the install (that is an admin approval gate)

## Compatibility

Slack platform apps. Distribution settings as of 2026.

## Variant phrasings

### slack app not distributed install failed

Same root cause. Distribution is the permission to leave the home workspace.

### invalid_team_for_non_distributed_app fix

There is no workaround besides distributing or staying home; the check is server-side.

### slack internal app install another workspace

Internal apps cannot do this by design. Distribute the app or rebuild it in the target workspace.

## Why it happens

Slack apps are workspace-internal by default. The OAuth flow checks the app's distribution flag against the target workspace, and a non-distributed app installing anywhere but home fails with this error. It is a scoping rule, not a bug.

## Edge cases

- Distribution requires review steps; plan lead time before a launch date
- Cloning the app config to another workspace creates a separate app with separate credentials
- Enterprise Grid has org-level distribution concepts that differ from workspace distribution

## If it still fails

- Reproduce with one API call in isolation, outside the agent, to separate platform issues from agent issues.
- Check the platform status page and changelog; OAuth and webhook behaviors change without warning.
- Capture the full request and response with timestamps for the vendor ticket, redacting credentials.
- Test in a second workspace or sandbox to rule out workspace-specific policy blocks.
- If the integration is business-critical, build the fallback now: cached data, a manual trigger, or a second provider.

## Prevention

- Store OAuth credentials in a secrets manager with rotation reminders.
- Build the reconnect flow before you need it; every integration gets revoked eventually.
- Log token ages so expiring grants are visible ahead of time.
- Keep a sandbox integration for testing config changes.
- Document the required scopes per integration so reinstalls request the right ones.
