Access-Control-Allow-Origin cannot be '*' with credentials: how to fix
Complete solution
Fixes CORS 'cannot be wildcard with credentials' by echoing the request origin. Use when credentialed cross-origin requests fail. Key trigger: the exact wildcard-with-credentials error.
Access-Control-Allow-Origin cannot be '*' with credentials: how to fix
TL;DR
The server sent Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * with credentials mode include, which browsers forbid. Echo the request's Origin back in the header (after validating it against an allowlist) and set Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true. Wildcard plus credentials is never valid.
Access-Control-Allow-Origin cannot be '*' when credentials mode is 'include'Steps
Confirm the response headers: Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * alongside a credentialed request. Expected: The forbidden combination is visible.
Replace the wildcard with origin echoing: read the Origin request header, validate it against your allowlist, and return it verbatim. Expected: The header carries the specific origin.
Set Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true on the credentialed responses. Expected: The browser accepts the credentials.
Handle preflights: the OPTIONS response needs the same origin logic plus Allow-Headers and Allow-Methods. Expected: Preflights pass.
Test from the real frontend origin, not curl alone; browsers enforce this, curl does not. Expected: The browser console is clean.
When to use
- credentialed CORS requests fail with the wildcard error
- the API serves a browser frontend on another origin
- fetch uses credentials: include
When not to use
- requests are not credentialed (wildcard is fine then)
- the frontend and API share an origin (no CORS involved)
- the error is a different CORS failure (read the console message)
Tool compatibility
- any backend
- browsers (fetch/XHR with credentials)
Variant phrasings
- "Access-Control-Allow-Origin wildcard credentials"
- "CORS cannot be star with credentials"
- "credentials include CORS wildcard fix"
Why it happens
The CORS spec forbids wildcard origins with credentials because it would let any site read authenticated responses. Browsers enforce it strictly. Servers that started as public APIs (wildcard) and later added auth hit this the moment the frontend sends cookies or authorization headers cross-origin.
Edge cases
- echoing without an allowlist is an open redirect for data; validate the origin
- Vary: Origin matters for caching; without it, caches can serve the wrong origin header
- some frameworks have a credentials-aware CORS mode; prefer it over hand-rolled headers
