kubectx: no context exists with the name: "[name]"
Routes kubectx unknown-context failures. Use when kubectx reports no context exists with the name. Not for current-context not set or kubeconfig missing.
You typed a context name that is not in your kubeconfig - a typo, or the name changed when a provider regenerated the config. kubectx refuses to touch the file rather than guessing. Run bare kubectx to list the real names, then switch with the exact one. If your context is genuinely gone, regenerate the kubeconfig.
The error
no context exists with the name: "unknown-context"What to do
- List what actually exists:
kubectxExpected: Prints one context per line.
- Switch with the exact name:
kubectx [exact-name] Expected: Prints Switched to context "[exact-name]"., exit 0.
If the name you expect is missing, regenerate the kubeconfig (aws eks update-kubeconfig, gcloud get-credentials, az aks get-credentials). Expected: The context reappears in the list.
When this applies
- the exact no context exists with the name message
- typos after copy-pasting context names
- contexts renamed by a kubeconfig regeneration
When it does NOT apply
- current-context is not set (no context selected at all)
- warning: kubeconfig file not found
Works with
kubectx (ahmetb/kubectx)
error: no context exists with the name (kubectl config use-context)
kubectl's wording for the same typo. Same fix: pick a name from the list.
Why it happens
kubectx wraps kubectl config use-context. kubectl validates the name against the file and errors instead of writing a dangling current-context, and kubectx leaves the kubeconfig untouched on failure.
Edge cases
- KUBECONFIG can merge several files - the name may exist in a file that is no longer on the path.
- Provider context names change format between CLI versions; re-list after every upgrade.
