Solution skill
fraud agent failed to merge device fingerprint with user session
Complete solution
Makes device-fingerprint to session merges reliable with explicit join rules, fingerprint TTLs, and deterministic conflict resolution. Use when the agent crashes or drops the link merging fingerprints with sessions. Not for fingerprint collection failures in the browser.
TL;DR
The device fingerprint and the session record disagree or one is missing, and the merge logic crashes or silently drops the link. Fix: define the join explicitly with a timestamp window, give fingerprints a TTL with a refresh policy, and resolve conflicts by rule with provenance logged. A missing fingerprint is a signal, not an error.
fraud agent failed to merge device fingerprint with user sessionUse this when
- Merges throw on null fingerprints or duplicate fingerprints across sessions.
- Sessions lose their device link silently in the logs.
- Fingerprint timestamps and session timestamps disagree.
Not for this skill when
- The fingerprint script fails in the browser. That is collection, not merging.
- The fingerprint vendor API is down. That is availability.
Steps
- Confirm the failure mode: null fingerprints, duplicates across sessions, or timestamp mismatches. Verify: the failing joins are categorized, not just counted.
- Define the join key and window: a fingerprint id matches a session created inside a sane window. Verify: the rule is written down, not implied in code.
- Give fingerprints a TTL and a refresh policy; stale fingerprints get re-collected. Verify: fingerprints older than the TTL are never used for decisions.
- Resolve conflicts deterministically: the newest observation wins and both values are kept with provenance. Verify: replaying the same inputs yields the same merged record.
- Treat missing fingerprints as a risk signal to the model, not a crash. Verify: a null fingerprint flows through scoring and lands in review.
Variant phrasings
device fingerprint session merge failed
Common phrasing.
fingerprint not linked to session
Link-focused search.
agent drops device fingerprint
Agent-focused phrasing.
Compatibility: any fingerprinting vendor; the merge logic lives in your identity resolution layer.
Why it happens
Fingerprints are collected client-side and sessions server-side, so they arrive on different clocks with different reliability. Merging two asynchronous, partially missing streams without explicit rules is where it breaks.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Shared devices mean one fingerprint to many sessions; the merge must allow one-to-many.
- Fingerprint collisions across users need a disambiguation rule, not silent merging.
- Retention regulations may limit fingerprint storage; size the TTL to respect your retention policy.
