## TL;DR
Delinquent is a status derived from payment records, and it lies when a payment was made but misapplied: wrong invoice reference, unapplied wire, or a payment sitting in suspense. Reconcile the customer's actual payment evidence against the ledger before any dunning or access cut touches them again.

```text
invoice payment failed: customer marked delinquent incorrectly
```

## Use this when
- The customer insists they paid and has a bank or card reference
- The invoice shows open while a payment of the same amount exists somewhere
- Access was restricted or dunning escalated on the disputed status

## Not for this skill when
- No payment evidence exists and terms are genuinely exceeded
- The payment was reversed or charged back

## Steps
1. Collect the customer's payment proof: amount, date, method, and reference. Verify: the claimed payment is specified exactly
2. Search the ledger and suspense or unapplied cash for that amount and date across all customer entities. Verify: the payment is found applied, misapplied, or truly absent
3. If misapplied, move it to the correct invoice and reverse the delinquency status and any late fees it caused. Verify: the account returns to current with fees corrected
4. If absent, share the exact search result and the correct payment instructions with the customer. Verify: the customer can complete payment against verified instructions
5. Add an unapplied-cash review before any delinquency escalation step. Verify: no account escalates while holding unapplied money

Compatibility: Compatibility: invoicing and ERP ledgers (Stripe Invoicing, NetSuite, QuickBooks) with dunning workflows, current versions.

## Why it happens
Delinquency pipelines trust the ledger completely, but ledgers have a suspense drawer where real money sits unmatched because a reference was mistyped. Searching by amount and date across entities finds money that invoice-number searches never will.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Customers with multiple entities or a parent payer routinely pay from a different name. Search the payer name on the proof, not only the account name.
- Suspend access restoration until the applied payment clears reversal risk for card payments.
- Document the correction on the account so the next CSM does not re-litigate the same payment.
