# workerd error: abort signal received mid-fetch

## TL;DR

An AbortSignal fired while the fetch was in flight: a timeout you set, or the client disconnecting. Check which signal aborted and why; if it is your timeout, the downstream is too slow or the timeout too tight.

```text
workerd error: abort signal received (fetch aborted mid-request)
```

## Steps

1. Identify the signal: your AbortSignal.timeout, a manual controller, or client disconnect.
   Expected: The abort source is named.

2. If it is your timeout, check the downstream's latency: is it slow, or is the timeout unrealistic.
   Expected: The mismatch is quantified.

3. Adjust: raise the timeout with headroom over p99, or fix the downstream.
   Expected: Aborts stop.

4. If it is client disconnect, make the handler abort-aware and stop wasted work.
   Expected: Disconnects are cheap.

5. Log abort reasons distinctly from other fetch failures.
   Expected: The signal is visible in metrics.

## When to use

- fetches abort mid-request
- timeouts fire on slow downstreams
- clients disconnect often

## When not to use

- no abort is involved (different fetch failure)
- the downstream is fast (check for a too-tight timeout)
- the signal is never set (then something else aborts)

## Tool compatibility

- workerd
- AbortSignal

## Variant phrasings

- "workerd abort signal fetch"
- "fetch aborted mid-request worker"
- "abortsignal timeout workerd"

## Why it happens

AbortSignal is how workerd cancels in-flight work: timeouts, client disconnects, and manual controllers all funnel through it. An abort is not a network failure; it is a decision (yours or the client's) that the wait should end. Debugging starts with whose decision it was.

## Edge cases

- the timeout should exceed the downstream p99 with headroom, not match the median
- abort-aware handlers save significant compute on disconnect-heavy endpoints
- unhandled abort rejections crash the worker; always catch them
