## TL;DR

The cost center's budget envelope for the period is fully committed, so Spendesk blocks new spend against it. Check the envelope's committed versus spent amounts, then either request a budget top-up from the budget owner, move the expense to a cost center with room, or wait for the next period's envelope. The block is the budget control working, not a system error.

## Error

```text
Spendesk: budget envelope exceeded for this cost center
```

## Steps

1. Open the budget in Spendesk and compare committed, spent, and remaining amounts for the cost center. Expected: remaining shows zero or negative, confirming the envelope is exhausted.
2. Identify which pending requests are consuming the envelope. Expected: you can see the committed pipeline versus actual spend.
3. Request a budget top-up from the budget owner with the business reason, or ask finance to reallocate from another cost center. Expected: the owner approves and the envelope increases.
4. Alternatively, code the expense to a cost center whose envelope has room, if the spend legitimately belongs there. Expected: the expense validates against the new envelope.
5. Resubmit the request. Expected: Spendesk accepts it against the funded envelope.

## When to use

- Spendesk blocks a request with "budget envelope exceeded for this cost center".
- A cost center's budget is consumed early in the period.
- An urgent purchase needs spend against an exhausted envelope.

## When not to use

- The card itself declined for other reasons.
- The approval chain is the blocker, not the budget.
- The envelope shows room but the request still fails (a different validation error).

## Tool compatibility

Spendesk with budgets and cost centers (current 2026 releases). Budget-owner role required for top-ups.

### Variant phrasings

### spendesk "no budget remaining" for a team

Same exhaustion in team-budget wording. Top-up or reallocate.

### budget request denied as over-envelope in spendesk

The request is fine; the envelope is not. Fund the envelope first.

### cost center budget exhausted mid-quarter in spendesk

Common when hiring or projects accelerate spend. Re-forecast and top up.

## Why it happens

Spendesk envelopes pre-commit budget so teams cannot overspend the plan: committed requests reduce the available balance before money moves. Fast spend, underestimated budgets, or large committed-but-unspent requests drain the envelope early in the period. The block protects the plan; the remedies are all funding decisions (top-up, reallocation, re-forecast), which is why they need the budget owner's approval.
