## TL;DR
"Inactive recipient" means Postmark will not deliver to that address: it previously hard-bounced, the recipient unsubscribed, or someone manually deactivated it. The reply is not lost because of your content; it is suppressed by policy. Check the suppression reason, reactivate only with the recipient's consent (or fix the underlying address problem first), and route urgent replies through another channel meanwhile.

## The query

```text
postmark "inactive recipient" bounce on ticket reply
```

## Use this when

- Ticket replies bounce as inactive recipient
- Customers report not receiving replies
- You are managing suppression lists
- Debugging reply deliverability

## Not for

- Designing email templates
- Setting up Postmark accounts
- Handling spam complaints
- Choosing an email provider

## Steps

### 1. Look up the suppression reason for the address

Postmark records why the recipient is inactive: hard bounce, spam complaint, manual suppression, unsubscribe. The reason determines the fix. A typo'd address needs correction; a spam complaint needs consent.

Expected output: the specific suppression reason known.

### 2. Fix the underlying address problem first

If the address hard-bounced, find the correct address (ask the customer in-app, check the CRM). Reactivating a still-broken address just re-bounces and re-suppresses. Fix the address, then reactivate.

Expected output: a verified correct address before reactivation.

### 3. Reactivate only with proper basis

Manual suppression can be lifted by you; spam complaints and unsubscribes need the recipient's explicit re-consent. Reactivating a spam complainant without consent is how accounts get suspended. Know which category you are in.

Expected output: reactivation with the right authorization.

### 4. Route the pending reply through another channel

The customer is waiting now. Send the reply in-app, via chat, or by phone while the email issue resolves. Do not let the suppression block the support conversation; the channel is the problem, not the message.

Expected output: the reply delivered via an alternate channel.

### 5. Alert agents when replies hit suppressions

Make the bounce visible in the ticket: the agent should know the email did not go out. Silent suppression plus an agent who thinks the reply sent is how customers get ignored for days.

Expected output: suppression bounces surfaced on the ticket.

## Template: the checklist

```text
Inactive recipient handling:
[ ] Suppression reason looked up per address
[ ] Address corrected before any reactivation
[ ] Reactivation with proper consent basis
[ ] Pending replies routed via alternate channel
[ ] Bounces surfaced visibly on the ticket
```

## Variant phrasings

### postmark inactive recipient ticket reply

Steps 1 and 4. Reason first, alternate channel now.

### email suppressed postmark support reply

Steps 1 and 5. Lookup plus agent visibility.

### customer not receiving ticket replies

Steps 1 and 4. Check suppression, route around it.

## Why it happens

Suppression lists are write-once protections: one hard bounce or complaint deactivates the address permanently to protect sender reputation. Support tools keep sending to the address because the ticket still lists it as the requester. The suppression is doing its job (protecting deliverability); the ticket workflow just never learned about it.

## Edge cases

- Shared inboxes: one person's spam complaint suppresses the whole shared address. Verify with the team before reactivating.
- Reactivation racing new bounces: fix the address before reactivating, or the next send re-suppresses immediately.
- Suppression on the agent's own address: misconfigured notifications can suppress internal addresses. Check both sides.
- Legal holds on suppression: some suppressions must not be lifted (regulatory). Respect them absolutely.
