## TL;DR
Zoho's authtoken error means the credential string your call carries isn't accepted, and with Zoho there are three usual reasons: the credential expired, it was generated for a different Zoho data center (.com vs .eu vs .in), or you're mixing the old authtoken scheme with endpoints that expect OAuth. Check the data center first; it's the one people forget.

## The query

```text
zoho desk api invalid authtoken
```

## Use this when

- Zoho Desk API calls fail with 'invalid authtoken'
- A working integration suddenly starts failing
- The credential works for one Zoho service but not Desk

## Not for

- Zoho OAuth scope errors (different failure)
- Zoho API rate limits
- Ticket API validation errors

## Steps

### 1. Confirm the data center in your URLs

Zoho accounts live in a specific data center, and the API domain must match: accounts.zoho.com, .eu, .in, and so on. A credential minted in the EU data center fails against .com endpoints. Check your account's data center in the Zoho accounts page.

Expected output: the API domain matching your account's data center.

### 2. Regenerate the credential cleanly

If the data center is right, the credential itself is dead: expired, revoked, or pasted wrong. Generate a fresh one from the Zoho accounts page, update every caller in one pass, and test immediately.

Expected output: a fresh credential returning 200 on a simple ticket list call.

### 3. Stop mixing authtoken and OAuth

Zoho has been moving services to OAuth. If your integration sends an old-style authtoken to an endpoint that now expects an OAuth access credential, it fails. Check the current Desk API docs for which scheme the endpoint wants.

Expected output: every endpoint receiving the auth scheme its docs describe.

### 4. Update all stored copies

Credentials live in env files, CI secrets, and deployed configs. A rotation that misses one caller produces failures that look random. Search for the old credential value and replace every copy.

Expected output: zero remaining references to the old credential.

## Variant phrasings

### zoho invalid authtoken desk api

Steps 1 and 2: data center first, then regenerate.

### zoho api authentication failed suddenly

Step 1's data center check; Zoho migrates accounts between DCs occasionally.

## Why it happens

Zoho's multi-data-center setup means the same credential is valid in exactly one region's endpoints, and nothing in the error tells you which region it wants. Add the old authtoken scheme lingering in ancient integrations, and 'invalid authtoken' becomes a grab bag for three different problems with one message.

## Edge cases

- Zoho refreshes OAuth credentials on its own schedule. Implement refresh, don't hardcode.
- Self-client vs regular OAuth apps have different flows. Use the one your integration type needs.
- The accounts domain and the API domain differ. Don't send API calls to the accounts host.
