IndexNow: how to notify Bing of new content
Explains IndexNow for notifying Bing and other search engines of new or changed URLs: key setup, the ping call, and wiring it into a publish pipeline. Use it when you want Bing-indexed pages updated quickly without waiting for recrawls. Not for Google indexing.
TL;DR
IndexNow is a simple ping protocol: you prove domain ownership with a key file, then POST new or updated URLs to Bing (and Yandex, and others that adopted it) so they crawl the changes immediately. It takes minutes to set up and it is the fastest way to get Bing to notice fresh content. Google does not support it, so this is a Bing-side complement to your Google flow.
IndexNow: how to notify Bing of new contentUse this when
- You publish content and want Bing to index it fast
- You update pages often and want Bing's copy to stay fresh
- Your audience includes Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia users (they pull from Bing's index)
- You want a push model instead of waiting for Bing's crawl cycle
Not for this skill when
- You need Google indexing (Google ignores IndexNow; use Search Console)
- Your content never changes after publish and Bing already crawls you fine
- You want ranking help (IndexNow affects crawl speed, not rankings)
Steps
- Generate a key and host the key file. Create a random key string, save it as a text file at your domain root named after the key. Expected: Bing can fetch the key file, proving you control the domain.
File: https://example.com/[your-key].txt
Contents: the key string itself, nothing else.- Send the IndexNow ping. POST a JSON payload with your host, the key, and the list of changed URLs. Expected: a 200 response meaning Bing accepted the notification.
POST https://www.bing.com/indexnow
Body: host, key, keyLocation, urlList (up to 10,000 URLs per call).- Wire it into your publish pipeline. After a successful publish, collect the new and updated URLs and ping once per batch. Expected: every publish run ends with Bing notified.
Publish hook: gather changed URLs -> single IndexNow POST ->
log the response code.- Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools. The URL submission section shows received URLs and their status. Expected: submitted URLs appear as received, then indexed over the following days.
Bing Webmaster Tools -> URL Submission -> check received list.- Keep the key file live. If the key file disappears, pings fail authentication. Expected: the key URL stays reachable permanently.
Monitor: fetch the key file URL weekly; alert if it 404s.Variant phrasings
Notify Bing of new pages instantly
IndexNow is the instant channel; Bing Webmaster Tools URL submission is the manual backup.
IndexNow setup for a blog
Steps 1 and 2 are the whole setup; most CMS platforms have a plugin that does both.
Does IndexNow help Google
No. Google does not participate. Use Search Console request indexing for Google.
Why it happens
Traditional search relies on crawlers revisiting sites on their own schedule, which means fresh content can sit undiscovered for days. IndexNow flips it to a push model: the publisher tells the search engine "this changed, come look." Bing adopted it because fresher indexes are a competitive advantage against Google, and publishers adopt it because it is one POST instead of waiting.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Dont ping URLs that 404 or redirect chains; Bing treats noisy pings as low-quality signals.
- The 10,000 URL batch limit is generous; pinging your whole sitemap daily is wasteful and can get the key throttled.
- Key file must be served as plain text with the exact key as contents; extra whitespace breaks validation.
- IndexNow notifies; it doesnt guarantee indexing. Thin or duplicate pages still get skipped.
- If you use a CDN, make sure the key file is served from origin correctly and not cached stale.
