## TL;DR
Activity timelines accumulate dates from every era and integration: ISO strings, US and European slash dates, epoch values, and human text like next Tuesday. A single strict parser fails on the mixture. Parse with an ordered format list, resolve ambiguity using the record's source system, store normalised ISO dates alongside the originals, and quarantine what still fails for review.

agent couldn't parse the Salesforce activity timeline: date formats inconsistent, how to fix
```
## Use this when
- The agent errors or mis-sorts on a subset of timeline records
- Date strings visibly vary across records and sources
- Failures cluster on records from one integration or era
## Not for this skill when
- Dates are stored as proper typed fields and the bug is in display logic
- The failing field is a free-text note, not a date field at all
## Steps
1. Sample 200 raw date values from the timeline and group them by actual format. Verify: every format in production is enumerated with examples
2. Identify each format's source system or era to resolve ambiguous cases like 03/04. Verify: ambiguity rules are decided per source, not globally
3. Implement multi-format parsing at ingestion, writing a normalised date plus the original string. Verify: the failing records parse and sort correctly in a test pass
4. Quarantine unparseable values with their record ids for human review instead of dropping the records. Verify: no activity silently vanishes from the timeline
5. Add a format monitor: new date shapes appearing in the feed are logged weekly. Verify: the next integration's format drift is caught early
### activity dates mis-sort
Compatibility: Compatibility: CRM activity data (Salesforce tasks and events, HubSpot engagements) parsed by agent code in Python or similar, current versions.
## Why it happens
Inconsistent dates are a history artefact: every integration wrote in its own dialect and none were wrong at the time. Normalising at the boundary with source-aware rules respects that history, while a single global format guess silently corrupts the ambiguous minority.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Slash dates are the dangerous ones because they parse successfully into the wrong date. Source-based disambiguation is not optional.
- Relative text dates (next Tuesday) need the record's creation date as their anchor; store both.
- Keep originals forever. Normalisation bugs are only fixable if the raw value survives.
