receipt accounting distribution is not balanced" error in Oracle when the receiving batch transfers to the GL
Fixes the Oracle error receipt accounting distribution is not balanced when the receiving batch transfers to the GL: find the receipt line whose accounted distributions split unevenly, correct the SLA or item cost rounding, and rerun the transfer. Use in Oracle receiving and cost management. Not for a PO receipt that never created accounting at all.
TL;DR
Receiving accounting must debit inventory or expense and credit the accrual for exactly the same accounted amount on every receipt. This error means one or more receipt lines produced distributions that do not balance in the ledger currency, typically because the PO price, the item cost and the conversion rate rounded in different directions, or because a landed cost charge split across lines left a cent behind. Run the receiving accounting register filtered to the failed batch, find the receipt lines with unequal debit and credit accounted amounts, and correct the source: adjust the distribution on the receipt, fix the charge allocation, or amend the SLA rounding for the receiving event class. Then reprocess the batch and reconcile the AP accrual account.
"receipt accounting distribution is not balanced" error in Oracle when the receiving batch transfers to the GLUse this when
- Transferring receiving accounting to the GL fails in Oracle with receipt accounting distribution is not balanced.
- The receipts themselves posted and inventory quantities are correct.
- The batch includes foreign currency POs or landed cost charges.
Not for this skill when
- No distributions exist for the receipts at all. That is a receiving or costing run failure, diagnosed in cost management first.
- The imbalance sits in payables invoice accounting rather than receiving. Use the subledger accounted balance path for AP.
Steps
- Run the receiving accounting register or distributions report for the failed batch and export the lines with their accounted amounts. Verify: the report lists every receipt distribution in the batch
- Sum accounted debits and credits per receipt line and isolate the lines that do not balance. Verify: the offending receipt lines and their exact differences are named
- Inspect each offending receipt: PO price and currency, conversion rate, item cost and any landed cost or tax charges allocated to it. Verify: the rounding or allocation source of the imbalance is identified per line
- Correct the source data or SLA rule for the receiving event class, following change control for the rule change. Verify: the corrected distribution or rule is saved and ready for reprocessing
- Reprocess the receiving accounting for the batch, transfer to GL, and reconcile the accrual account movement to the receipts. Verify: the batch transfers balanced and the accrual account agrees with open receipts

Why it happens
Receiving accounting is generated automatically from operational data, so nobody keys the debits and credits - they are computed from PO price, quantity, cost and rates. Computation means rounding, and rounding per line across currency conversion and charge allocation can leave a receipt whose accounted credit is a cent away from its debit. The transfer refuses it because the accrual account is a control account: small forced differences there become permanent reconciliation noise between inventory, AP and the GL.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Retroactive price adjustments and PO change orders recreate distributions; recheck lines whose POs changed after receipt.
- Average-cost organisations see this more often because cost itself is a computed, rounded number.
- If one item fails repeatedly, inspect its cost setup and charge templates rather than fixing receipts one by one.
