## TL;DR

Keep directory listings fresh with a quarterly sweep: maintain one canonical file with the current copy, screenshots, and links, diff it against what each directory shows, and batch the updates. Stale listings with dead links or ancient screenshots quietly cost you trust, so the sweep is maintenance, not vanity.

keeping directory listings updated across dozens of sites
```
## Use this when
- Listings are live on many directories
- The product, pricing, or screenshots changed
- Doing a quarterly maintenance pass
## Not for this skill when
- You have fewer than five listings (just update them directly)
- Nothing changed since the last sweep (skip it)
- A listing drives no traffic and has no SEO value (consider dropping it)
## Steps
1. Keep a canonical listing file. One-liner, description, URLs, current screenshots, pricing: the source every directory copy derives from. Expected: one file that is always current.
2. Snapshot what each directory shows. During the sweep, record the live listing's copy version, links, and screenshot date per directory. Expected: a diff between canonical and live.
```
sweep row:
  directory: [name]
  listing URL: [url]
  copy version: [date or hash]
  links live: yes/no
  screenshots current: yes/no
```
3. Batch the updates by directory mechanics. Some allow self-service edits, some need a resubmission, some need an email. Group by mechanism and work through them. Expected: every stale listing touched in one pass.
4. Fix links first, copy second, screenshots third. Dead links hurt most; outdated copy next; old screenshots last. Expected: priority order respected under time pressure.
5. Log the sweep date and set the next one. Quarterly is the default cadence. Expected: the next sweep is scheduled, not hoped for.
## Variant phrasings
### updating listings across many directories
Canonical source file, quarterly diff against live listings, batched updates by mechanism.
### directory listing maintenance at scale
One canonical file plus a quarterly sweep beats ad-hoc edits every time.
### keeping directory profiles current
Links first, copy second, screenshots third, every quarter.
## Why it happens
Listings decay: links rot, screenshots age, pricing changes, positioning evolves. Nobody updates directories in the moment because each one is a small chore; the quarterly sweep turns fifty small chores into one scheduled job.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Some directories lock listings after approval; note which ones during the sweep.
- Changing the canonical URL breaks every listing at once; plan URL changes carefully.
- Screenshots with old UI versions signal an unmaintained tool; refresh them yearly at least.
- Drop directories that are dead rather than updating them; the sweep is also a prune.
