Solution skill

SCIM user update failed" schema violation on patch

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes SCIM user updates failing with schema violations on PATCH. Use when a SCIM PATCH is rejected for schema reasons. Not for auth or not-found errors.

TL;DR

Send only attributes the target schema supports, with valid operations and paths. SCIM servers reject PATCH requests that reference unknown attributes or use unsupported ops.

Error

SCIM user update failed: schema violation on patch (attribute not supported)

Steps

  1. Fetch the target's schema from its Schemas endpoint and check whether the patched attribute exists and is mutable. Expected: you know if the attribute is even patchable.
  2. Fix the PATCH body: use valid SCIM operations (add, remove, replace), correct path syntax, and values matching the attribute type. Expected: the request conforms to the schema.
  3. Remove any custom extension attributes the target does not advertise; unadvertised extensions are the most common violation. Expected: only supported attributes remain.
  4. Re-send the PATCH. Expected: the update succeeds.

When to use

  • SCIM PATCH rejected with schema violation
  • Provisioning updates attributes the target does not support
  • A new SCIM vendor endpoint behaves differently

When not to use

  • The PATCH is well-formed but the server 500s (a server bug)
  • Auth fails before the schema is even checked (fix credentials)
  • You need the attribute supported (extend the target schema or map to an existing attribute)

Tool compatibility

SCIM 2.0 servers (Okta, Entra, and app targets). PATCH semantics follow RFC 7644.

Variant phrasings

schema violation only for one attribute

That attribute is read-only or unsupported. Drop it from the PATCH or map it elsewhere.

violation after switching SCIM vendors

Schemas differ by vendor. Re-read the new vendor's schema and adjust the PATCH.

Why it happens

Each SCIM server publishes its own schema, and provisioning code written against one vendor's schema breaks against another's. PATCH is strict: one bad attribute fails the whole request.
