Solution skill
dmarc p=reject blocking legitimate partner mail flow failure
Complete solution
Unblocks legitimate partner mail rejected under DMARC p=reject, by identifying the partner stream that is unauthenticated or misaligned and fixing it safely. Use when moving to p=reject breaks a real partner flow. Not for spoofed mail correctly rejected under the policy.
When it applies

Instructions
TL;DR
p=reject tells receivers to refuse mail that fails DMARC. When it breaks a partner flow, that flow was surviving on unenforced failure: a partner sending as your domain from its own platform without aligned DKIM is typical. Do not roll back enforcement for the whole domain. Inventory the partner stream from aggregate reports, give it aligned authentication, and only then keep reject in place.
dmarc p=reject blocking legitimate partner mail flow failureUse this when
- Partner notifications, invoices or support mail bounce after DMARC enforcement was raised.
- Aggregate reports show a partner IP range failing alignment.
Not for this skill when
- The rejected mail is spoofing you never authorised. Rejection is correct; do not create an exception.
- Your own primary mail fails DMARC. Fix your core stream before partner streams.
Steps
- From aggregate reports and bounce samples, identify the exact partner stream: source, From domain and which identifier fails. Verify: the stream is named with evidence, not described generally.
- Decide the ownership model: partner signs DKIM with your domain using a dedicated selector, or partner mail moves to a delegated subdomain you control. Verify: one model is chosen and the partner agrees to it.
- Publish the selector key or subdomain records and have the partner send a controlled test. Verify: test mail shows aligned dkim=pass from the partner platform.
- If a temporary relaxation is unavoidable, scope it to that subdomain with its own DMARC record rather than weakening the organisational policy. Verify: the root domain stays at p=reject.
- Monitor aggregate reports for one full cycle after the fix. Verify: partner failure rows disappear and no new unauthenticated stream appears.
Variant phrasings
dmarc reject breaks third party sender fix
The third party sender variant.
partner sends as our domain dmarc alignment delegation
The delegation variant.
Compatibility: RFC 7489 enforcement policies, delegated subdomain and selector models used by major SaaS senders.
Why it happens
Enforcement exposes every informal arrangement where another organisation sends as your domain from infrastructure you never authenticated. The mail was always failing DMARC; p=none simply hid the consequence.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Receivers do not offer a DMARC allowlist for your domain. Any workaround promising one is a filter exception on their side, not a DMARC feature.
- A dedicated subdomain per partner limits blast radius if that partner is compromised.
- Keep a pre-enforcement inventory from at least 30 days of aggregate data before raising policy again.
