Okta push group failed with error "group not found in target app" troubleshooting

Export

Fixes the Okta push group group not found in target app failure by creating or relinking the target group first. Use when a group push fails while member pushes succeed. Not for group rule or membership count problems.

TL;DR

Create or relink the target group, then push again. Compare the Okta group name and the push mapping with what actually exists in the target app, fix naming drift or a deleted target group, confirm the app credentials can manage groups, and re-run the group push for that group alone before resuming the schedule.

group not found in target app

Use this when

  • An Okta group push reports that the named group is not found in the target application.
  • User provisioning for the same app works, so the connection and user store are healthy.
  • The group was renamed, deleted, or created under a slightly different name in the target.

Not for this skill when

  • Members fail to arrive after the group push succeeds. That is a membership sync issue handled separately.
  • The app does not support group push at all. Use the app group import or manual model instead.

Steps

  1. Open Okta, go to the app, Push Groups, and open the failing group entry to read the exact target name Okta tried to find, including any prefix or suffix the push configuration adds. Copy the name exactly for comparison. Verify: the attempted target group name is recorded character for character
  2. Search the target application group list for that name and for near matches with different spacing, case, or a renamed team label. Note whether a group exists under a variant or is truly absent, and check the target audit log for a deletion. Verify: the target group state, present as variant or absent, is established
  3. If a variant exists and is the intended group, relink in Okta by choosing link to an existing group and selecting the variant, correcting the push name mapping so future pushes use the stored target identifier. If no group exists, create it in the target with the agreed name or let the push create it where the app allows creation. Verify: Okta push status for the group shows linked
  4. Confirm the provisioning service account in the target holds group management permission, because some apps return not found when the caller cannot see groups outside its scope. Test by listing groups through the same credentials the connector uses. Verify: the connector identity can list and manage the target group
  5. Re-run the push for this group only, confirm members flow after the group link succeeds, and spot-check two members inside the target group. Watch the next scheduled push to confirm the status stays green without manual help. Verify: group push succeeds and membership matches Okta
  6. Add a naming convention note for app groups, including who may rename groups in target apps, and require Okta push mappings to be reviewed when a team renames itself, so drift is caught as a planned change. Verify: the convention is documented where app admins work

Why it happens

Okta group push maintains a link between an Okta group and a target group, usually by name on first push and by identifier afterwards. Renaming or deleting the group inside the target app, or renaming it in Okta without updating the mapping, breaks that lookup and the push reports the group as not found even while user provisioning continues normally. The target state and the mapping must agree. Relinking or recreating restores the pair, and governing renames prevents the silent drift that causes most recurrences.

Variants and edge cases

Target group exists but push still says not found

Check for a second app instance or tenant in the integration, such as production versus sandbox confusion, and confirm the connector points at the tenant you searched.

Group push creates duplicates instead

When push creates a new group each cycle, the link identifier is not being stored. Re-link once manually and avoid editing the target group name afterward.

Nested or dynamic groups in the target

Some targets flatten or reject nested structures. Simplify the pushed group to a flat membership for apps that do not model nesting.

Compatibility: Applies to Okta group push to apps supporting group provisioning such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and SCIM apps. Requires Okta app admin and target group admin rights.
