# SEC full-text search API times out on large result sets

## TL;DR
The EDGAR full-text search API times out on huge result sets because it is a search convenience endpoint, not a bulk export tool, and giant queries exhaust its time budget. Shrink the query with date ranges, forms, and CIKs, page through small result windows, and cache aggressively. For genuinely large pulls, the bulk archives and daily indexes are the right tool; search is for finding filings, archives are for downloading them.

## The error
```text
(HTTP 504 or client timeout)
SEC full-text search API timeout on large result set; no results returned
```

## When this helps
- full-text search calls time out on broad queries
- a filing-discovery agent stalls on large result sets
- choosing between search API and bulk archives
- briefing research needs bounded, fresh filing lists

## When it doesn't
- you need every historical filing matching a term; use the archives, not search
- the timeout is on filing downloads; that is a rate-limit problem instead
- you want real-time search; the index lags filings by a short delay

## Works with
efts.sec.gov JSON API as of 2026; curl 7.x+, python 3.8+ with requests. Result window parameters are API-side.

## Steps
### 1. Narrow the query with date range and form filters
```bash
curl -s --max-time 60 "https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index?q=%22quarterly%20results%22&dateRange=custom&startdt=2026-07-01&enddt=2026-09-30&forms=10-Q" -o fts.json -w "HTTP %{http_code}\n"
```
Expected: HTTP 200 with a bounded result set. Date ranges and form filters are the difference between a search and a full-index scan.

### 2. Page through small windows instead of one giant pull
```python
import requests, time
s = requests.Session()
s.headers.update({"User-Agent": "IntelBriefingBot/1.0"})
start = 0
while True:
    r = s.get("https://efts.sec.gov/LATEST/search-index", params={"q": "results", "start": start, "count": 40}, timeout=60)
    hits = r.json().get("hits", {}).get("hits", [])
    print(start, len(hits))
    if len(hits) != 40:
        break
    start += 40
    time.sleep(1)
```
Expected: Steady pages of 40 hits. Small windows stay inside the API's time budget where one giant query times out.

### 3. Cache search results by query hash
```python
import hashlib, json
q = "quarterly results 10-Q 2026-Q3"
fp = hashlib.md5(q.encode()).hexdigest()
print("cache key:", fp)
print("store fts.json under cache/" + key + ".json; reuse for 24h")
```
Expected: A cache key per query. Full-text results barely change intraday, so re-running the same big search is pure waste.

### 4. Switch bulk history needs to the archives
```bash
curl -s "https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/full-index/2026/QTR3/" | head -10
```
Expected: The quarterly full index. When you need every filing of a type rather than a search slice, the archives are faster and never time out.

## Other ways people phrase this
### efts.sec.gov timeout large query
The endpoint behind the full-text search. Broad queries are the trigger; filters are the fix.

### sec search api 504 gateway timeout
The timeout surfacing as a 504. Same cause: the query is too broad for the time budget.

### full text search no results timeout
Timeouts return nothing, which looks like zero results. Distinguish the two before concluding a topic has no filings.

## Why it happens
The full-text search API runs each query against the filing index with a fixed time budget. Broad queries with no filters scan enormous result sets and blow the budget, so the API times out instead of returning partial garbage. It is built for targeted discovery, while bulk export is the archives' job.

## Edge cases
- The search index lags new filings slightly; for today's filings use the daily index, not search.
- Quoted phrases narrow results dramatically compared to bare keywords; use them.
- Very common terms like 'revenue' still time out even with filters; add a CIK or date bound.
- Cache invalidation matters around filing deadlines when new filings land in waves.
