how to fix sqlmap "WAF/IPS detected" blocking authorized assessment traffic

Complete solution

Handles sqlmap's WAF/IPS detected warning blocking authorized assessment traffic. Use when sqlmap flags a WAF on an in-scope target and requests start getting blocked. Not for testing systems you are not engaged to test.

TL;DR

The WAF is doing its job; on an authorized test you coordinate with the client, not fight their defenses. Get your tester IP allowlisted for the engagement window. Only if that is impossible, use tamper scripts and header rotation within the agreed scope, and document every bypass attempt.

WAF/IPS detected

Use this when

  • Sqlmap prints a WAF/IPS detection warning on an authorized target.
  • Payload requests start returning block pages or 403s.
  • The rules of engagement allow evasion-technique testing.

Not for this skill when

  • The target is not in scope. A WAF block is the universe telling you to stop.
  • The engagement forbids bypass attempts. Test what the WAF permits and report the rest.
  • You are testing without written authorization. Do not proceed at all.

Steps

  1. Confirm the block manually: send a classic payload by hand and record the response. Verify: you see a block page, 403, or WAF signature header.
  2. Ask the client contact to allowlist your egress IP for the engagement window. Verify: the same payload now reaches the app.
  3. If allowlisting is impossible, reduce signature hits: --tamper=space2comment --random-agent. Verify: requests reach the app instead of the block page.
  4. Slow down: --delay=1 --threads=1 to stay under rate-based rules. Verify: blocks stop triggering on volume.
  5. Document every bypass attempt, what triggered the WAF, and what the client approved. Verify: the report's methodology section covers it.

Variant phrasings

sqlmap WAF detected bypass

The bypass-oriented search.

sqlmap blocked by WAF authorized test

Engagement-context phrasing.

sqlmap tamper WAF IPS

Flag-oriented search.

Compatibility: sqlmap 1.x. Tamper script names are stable; availability varies slightly by install source.

Why it happens

WAFs signature-match classic injection strings (UNION SELECT, SLEEP, comment sequences). Sqlmap's default payloads are the most fingerprinted strings on the internet, so detection is expected, not a malfunction.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Tamper scripts change payload semantics. Re-verify findings manually; a tampered payload that "works" can be a false positive.
  • Bypassing a WAF the client asked you not to touch violates the engagement. Get it in writing.
  • Rate-based blocking looks like signature blocking. Slow down before assuming you need tamper scripts.
  • Report the WAF's effectiveness honestly. "WAF blocked all default payloads; bypassed with tamper X" is a useful finding for the client.
