Immutable solution version

fraud agent reprocessed settled transactions and failed the ledger check

Version 1

Complete solution

Prevents reprocessing of settled transactions with state guards, pre-write ledger checks, and idempotent batch operations. Use when reprocessed settled or captured payments fail reconciliation. Not for legitimate backfills with explicit state filters.

TL;DR

The agent swept already-settled transactions into a reprocessing batch and the ledger reconciliation failed because the money had already moved. Fix: filter by state before processing (pending or authorized only, never settled or captured), run the ledger check as a pre-condition that halts the batch, and make reprocessing idempotent. Settled means done.

fraud agent reprocessed settled transactions and failed the ledger check

Use this when

  • A reprocessing batch fails reconciliation and the batch contains settled or captured transactions.
  • Ledger mismatches appear right after an agent re-run or backfill.
  • The same transactions get reprocessed on every run.

Not for this skill when

  • The ledger fails on pending transactions too. That is a ledger bug, not a state filter bug.
  • A backfill intentionally replays history with its own guarded path.

Steps

  1. Confirm the scope: list the transaction ids in the failed batch with their states. Verify: settled or captured states are present in the batch.
  2. Add a state guard at the top of the batch: skip anything settled, refunded, or charged back. Verify: a mixed batch processes only the eligible subset.
  3. Run the ledger check before any write and halt the batch on mismatch. Verify: a mismatch stops the batch with the offending ids named.
  4. Make reprocessing idempotent with idempotency keys so an accidental second pass is a no-op. Verify: replaying the batch changes nothing.
  5. Alert when more than a small fraction of a batch is skipped by the guard. Verify: a misconfigured selector pages someone instead of silently skipping.

Variant phrasings

settled transactions reprocessed

Short phrasing.

ledger check failed reprocess

Reconciliation-focused search.

agent replays captured payments

Capture-focused phrasing.

Compatibility: any payments ledger; the guard is a status filter on the transaction query and the check is a balance or event-count reconciliation.

Why it happens

The batch selector was written as "all transactions in the window" and settlement states were added later. The agent does what the selector says, and the selector says everything.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Partial settlements and split captures: guard on the per-item state, not the order state.
  • Ledger checks that run after writes can only report damage; they must run before.
  • Backfills after an outage legitimately reprocess: give them their own guarded path with explicit state filters, never a bypass.
