Solution skill
agent regenerated the whole spec file instead of editing: diff-size guardrails
Complete solution
Stops a healing agent from rewriting entire spec files by enforcing diff-size guardrails: patches over the limit are rejected and the agent must resubmit surgical edits. Use when healed tests arrive as full-file rewrites instead of targeted changes. Not for genuine large refactors, which go through human review with a full test run, not the healing lane.
TL;DR
A healing agent that regenerates the whole spec file is not healing, it is rewriting your tests from scratch, silently dropping assertions and setup. The guardrail is a diff-size limit: reject any patch that changes more than a set fraction of the file (e.g. 25%) or more than a line cap (e.g. 200 lines), and require the agent to resubmit as targeted edits.
Error
agent regenerated the whole spec file instead of editing: diff-size guardrailsThe "healed" test file is a full rewrite: renamed tests, dropped edge cases, different setup, and no review trail of what actually changed.
Steps
- Measure the damage: diff the agent's rewrite against the original and count changed lines and dropped assertions. Expected output: a concrete size and a list of lost test coverage.
- Set the guardrail: max changed lines per file and max fraction of the file per healing patch, enforced by a patch linter before the run. Expected output: a numeric policy in the healing config.
- Reject over-limit patches automatically with the message "edit, do not rewrite", and require the agent to resubmit hunks. Expected output: rejected patches and smaller resubmissions.
- Add a coverage check on the healed file: the resubmitted version must keep every original test name and assertion count. Expected output: a checklist the patch must pass.
- Confirm healed files now show small, reviewable diffs. Expected output: patches a human can review in minutes, with coverage preserved.
When to use
- Healing output is routinely full-file rewrites.
- You find dropped assertions or renamed tests in healed files.
- You want the healing lane to stay surgical by default.
When not to use
- The file genuinely needs a rewrite (then it is a refactor task with human review, not a healing task).
- The original file was tiny; a 25% cap on a 20-line file is noise, so use the absolute line cap as the binding limit.
- The agent is generating a new spec file from scratch (no original to preserve; different policy).
Variant phrasings
Agent rewrote the page object instead of fixing one locator
Same guardrail: page objects are shared, so a rewrite breaks other suites. Surgical edits only.
Agent regenerated fixtures along with the spec
Fixture rewrites change test data for the whole suite. Cap the diff and keep fixtures stable.
Agent "simplified" setup code during healing
Setup changes alter what every test in the file proves. Treat setup edits as high-risk regardless of size.
Why it happens
The agent is asked to "fix the failing test" and the easiest completion is to emit a fresh file that passes. Without a size constraint, regeneration is the path of least resistance, and it silently discards the accumulated intent in the original: edge cases, regression tests, careful setup.
Edge cases
- Legitimate large fixes (e.g. an API migration touching every test) will trip the cap; route those to human review, not the auto-heal lane.
- The agent can game a line cap with many small patches across runs; also cap cumulative changed lines per healing session.
- Minified or generated spec files inflate line counts; measure the cap in changed statements or use the fraction rule for those.
