agent failed to write the audit report after the scan, seat data lost
Fixes license agents that lose seat data when the final report write fails. Use when scan data is lost because the report step failed. Not for scan failures.
TL;DR
Write scan results incrementally during the run, not once at the end. A single final write is a single point of failure for the whole scan's data.
Error
(scan completed; report write failed; seat data lost; no error text beyond the write failure)Steps
- Confirm the loss pattern: the scan succeeds but the report artifact is missing or empty. Expected: the write step identified as the failure.
- Change the agent to persist results incrementally (per chunk, per source) to durable storage as the scan progresses. Expected: partial results survive.
- Make the report generation read from the persisted results, idempotently, so it can be retried independently of the scan. Expected: report decoupled from scan.
- Re-run. Expected: even if the report step fails, the data is safe and the report can be regenerated.
When to use
- Scan data is lost when the report write fails
- The report is written once at the end
- Long scans precede the single write
When not to use
- The scan itself fails (a scan problem)
- The report is wrong but written (a reporting logic problem)
- Storage is unavailable (an infrastructure problem)
Tool compatibility
Any license audit pipeline.
Variant phrasings
report write fails intermittently
Incremental writes plus idempotent report generation make retries safe.
agent holds results in memory only
That is the root cause. Persist early and often.
Why it happens
Agents treat the scan as the work and the write as an afterthought. Hours of API calls funnel into one write, and any failure there discards all of it.
