## TL;DR
A form that wont submit is usually failing validation silently: a required field somewhere out of view, an attachment over the size limit, or an inline error the user never scrolled to. The fix order: reproduce it, hunt for the hidden error (scroll the whole form), check attachments, then retry with extensions off. If the button does nothing at all with no error anywhere, that is the signal to escalate with a console capture.

## The query

```text
"form won't submit" validation troubleshooting
```

## Use this when

- A user says the submit button does nothing or the form wont go through
- You need to find validation errors the user cant see
- Form tickets keep resolving as "user error" without a clear cause
- You are writing a macro for stuck-form complaints

## Not for

- Designing or laying out forms
- Payment processing or checkout failures
- Server-side validation logic engineering
- Forms that submit but save wrong data

## Steps

### 1. Reproduce and watch the whole page

Fill the form yourself and submit. Watch for inline errors, especially above the fold: many forms show the error at the top or next to the field while the user's viewport is parked at the submit button. Note exactly what happens on click, nothing, a shake, a spinner that dies.

Expected output: a description of the exact submit behavior and any visible errors.

### 2. Hunt for hidden and conditional required fields

The classic cause: a required field the user cant see, a collapsed section, a conditional field that became required after an earlier answer, or a field on a previous tab of a multi-step form. Expand everything, scroll fully, and check each section for a required marker.

Expected output: the offending hidden or conditional field found, or ruled out.

### 3. Check attachments and field limits

Oversized files, disallowed file types, and over-long text fields all block submit, sometimes with an error and sometimes without. Ask what they attached and its size, and check text fields for character limits. Have them try submitting with the attachment removed as a test.

Expected output: the attachment or limit identified, or ruled out by the no-attachment test.

### 4. Retry with extensions off and autofill disabled

Autofill fills hidden fields with junk, and privacy extensions block the scripts that run validation. Have the user retry in a private window with autofill off. This resolves a real chunk of "works for everyone but me" form tickets.

Expected output: the form submits clean (environment issue) or still fails (product issue).

### 5. Capture the technical evidence and escalate

If it still fails with no visible error, open the browser console and network tab, submit once, and screenshot any red entries. That capture plus the repro steps from step 1 is a complete engineering handoff, no more "cant reproduce" bounce-backs.

Expected output: a console and network capture attached to an escalation with repro steps.

## Ready-to-use reply

```text
Forms usually refuse to submit because of a validation error hiding
somewhere, often in a collapsed section. Can you scroll back up through
the whole form and expand any collapsed sections, looking for a red
message? Also, if you attached a file, try submitting once without it.
Tell me what you find and we will go from there.
```

## Variant phrasings

### submit button does nothing

Steps 1 and 5. No feedback at all points at a script error, capture the console.

### form keeps saying please fix errors but I dont see any

Step 2 first. The error is real, it is just out of view.

### cant submit form with attachment

Step 3. Size and type limits, then the no-attachment test.

## Why it happens

Client-side validation runs before anything reaches the server, and its error display is only as good as the form's design. When the error renders outside the viewport, inside a collapsed section, or not at all, the user experiences a working-looking form with a dead button. The troubleshooting is really a search for the message the UI failed to show.

## Edge cases

- Date and number formats by locale: 03/04 means different things in the US and Europe. Ask what they typed.
- Captcha failing silently: some captchas block submit without a clear message. Ask them to complete it deliberately once.
- Double-submit protection: the button disables after one click and the user thinks it is broken. Check whether the submission actually went through.
- Required checkbox nobody sees: terms-acceptance boxes below the fold are a repeat offender.
