Solution skill

black screen on boot after kernel update crash

Version 1Sign in to save

Complete solution

Fixes a workstation or server that boots to a black screen after a kernel update, most often a graphics driver (DKMS) that failed to build for the new kernel, or the display manager starting before the GPU is ready. Use when the system is running behind the black screen (disk, network, SSH respond). Not for a machine that is actually powered off or panicking.

TL;DR

A black screen with a live system behind it is a display stack failure, and after a kernel update the prime suspect is the out-of-tree graphics module that did not rebuild via DKMS. Switch to a TTY or SSH in, check dkms status, rebuild or remove the failing module, or boot the previous kernel where the driver still works.

black screen on boot after kernel update crash

Use this when

  • The screen goes black after the boot logo following a kernel update.
  • The machine answers ping and SSH, or a TTY works with Ctrl Alt F3.
  • The host uses NVIDIA or another DKMS-built driver.

Not for this skill when

  • Nothing responds: no network, no TTY, fans or disk idle. That is a hang or panic, not a display failure.
  • The black screen happens only after login on one user account. That is a desktop session problem.

Steps

  1. Confirm the system is alive via SSH or a TTY login. Verify: you have a shell while the main screen stays black
  2. Check dkms status and the build log for the graphics driver against the new kernel. Verify: a failed build and its compiler error are visible, or the module is missing for this kernel
  3. Fix the build cause (usually missing kernel headers for the new kernel), install the matching headers package, and rerun the DKMS build. Verify: dkms reports the module installed for the new kernel
  4. Restart the display manager or reboot. Verify: the graphical login appears on the new kernel
  5. If the driver cannot build yet, set GRUB to boot the previous kernel by default and hold the new kernel until the vendor driver catches up. Verify: unattended reboots land on the working kernel

Variant phrasings

black screen after kernel update nvidia dkms failed

The common root-cause phrasing.

ubuntu black screen boot new kernel headers missing

The headers variant phrasing.

system boots but no display after update tty works

The symptom phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: Ubuntu and Fedora workstations with DKMS drivers; server consoles with GPU passthrough hit the same failure.

Why it happens

In-tree drivers ship with the kernel and cannot fall behind. Out-of-tree drivers are rebuilt per kernel by DKMS, and that build needs the matching kernel headers and a compatible compiler. When the build silently fails during the update, the new kernel boots with no graphics module, the display manager fails or starts to a dead output, and the user sees a black screen on an otherwise healthy machine.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Secure Boot adds a second failure: an unsigned rebuilt module is refused even when the build succeeds; check module signing and MOK enrollment.
  • Wayland versus Xorg changes which component fails first; the DKMS evidence is the same either way.
  • Laptops with hybrid graphics can black-screen on the external output only; test the internal panel before deep repair.
