WARNING] the web server responded with an HTTP error code" sqlmap on authorized target

Export

Handles sqlmap warning that the web server responded with an HTTP error code on an authorized target. Use when sqlmap flags error statuses before or during testing. Not for error codes caused by your own malformed URL.

TL;DR

The app answered with an error status (403, 404, 500) instead of normal content, so sqlmap cannot compare responses reliably. Identify the exact code with a manual request first: 403 means block or auth trouble, 404 means wrong endpoint, 500 means the app is erroring. Only resume testing once the baseline request returns the app's normal response.

[WARNING] the web server responded with an HTTP error code

Use this when

  • Sqlmap warns about HTTP error codes from the target.
  • Baseline requests (no payloads) also return the error code.
  • The endpoint should serve normal content according to the engagement docs.

Not for this skill when

  • Only payload-carrying requests error. That is the app reacting to input, which is informative.
  • You typed the URL wrong. Fix the URL; there is no tool problem.
  • The error code is expected for that endpoint. Some APIs 404 on missing resources by design.

Steps

  1. Request the URL manually with no payloads: curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "YOUR_TARGET_HOST/page?id=1". Verify: you know the exact code: 403, 404, 500, or other.
  2. If 403: treat as block or session problem first. Retry with a fresh session cookie and check for WAF signatures. Verify: a clean request still 403s before you blame payloads.
  3. If 404: confirm the endpoint path with the client docs or by browsing the app. Verify: the app serves the page normally without payloads.
  4. If 500: the app is crashing on the baseline request. Report it and get a stable baseline before testing. Verify: the baseline returns the app's normal page.
  5. Resume sqlmap only when baseline and payload responses are comparable. Verify: sqlmap stops warning and testing proceeds.

Variant phrasings

sqlmap HTTP error code warning

Compact phrasing.

sqlmap server responded with error

Alternate wording.

sqlmap 403 500 warning target

Code-specific search.

Compatibility: sqlmap 1.x. The warning text is stable across versions.

Why it happens

Sqlmap's detection logic compares normal vs payload responses. If the "normal" response is already an error page, every comparison is meaningless, so sqlmap warns instead of producing garbage findings. The warning is sqlmap protecting you from false positives.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • A WAF that 403s only payload requests is a finding about the WAF, not a broken target. Distinguish baseline errors from payload errors.
  • Apps that 500 on any unexpected input are fragile; note it and stay within safe payload levels.
  • Do not suppress the warning with flags and plow ahead. The resulting "findings" will be junk.
  • If the baseline is intermittently erroring, the app is flaky; schedule testing around it and note the flakiness.
