Solution skill

agent couldn't connect to the ticketing API: DNS failure during the nightly sweep

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes an agent that cannot connect to the ticketing API during the nightly sweep due to a DNS failure by adding resolution checks, retry with backoff, and endpoint health reporting. Use when connection errors name DNS or name resolution. Not for API authentication failures after a successful connection.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

A DNS failure at sweep time can be a provider issue, a local resolver problem, or a changed API hostname after a vendor migration. Resolve the hostname from the agent host, compare with resolution elsewhere, check the vendor's current API base in their status or docs, and make the sweep retry transient resolution failures instead of dying on the first one.

agent couldn't connect to the ticketing API: DNS failure during the nightly sweep

Use this when

  • Sweep logs show name-resolution or DNS errors for the ticketing API host
  • Other network calls from the same host may or may not work
  • The vendor recently changed domains, regions, or API hosts

Not for this skill when

  • The API connects but rejects credentials, a different failure class
  • The agent host lost all network access, an infrastructure incident

Steps

  1. Resolve the ticketing hostname from the agent host and from an independent resolver. Verify: whether the failure is local or global is established
  2. Check the vendor's status page and current documented API base URL for changes. Verify: a renamed or region-moved endpoint is confirmed or ruled out
  3. If the endpoint moved, update the configured base URL and re-run a single test call. Verify: the sweep connects on the corrected endpoint
  4. Add retry with backoff for transient resolution failures and a pre-flight connectivity check that fails the run early with a clear message. Verify: a transient blip no longer kills the whole sweep silently
  5. Record DNS and connectivity health in the run report so patterns (same time nightly) are visible. Verify: recurring resolver trouble becomes a trend someone can fix

Compatibility: Compatibility: helpdesk APIs (Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk) reached from scheduled agent jobs, current versions.

Why it happens

Name resolution is the first inch of every API call and the least monitored. Splitting the diagnosis into local versus global versus moved-endpoint takes minutes and prevents the two classic wastes: retrying a renamed endpoint forever, or rebuilding an integration for a resolver hiccup.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Nightly timing matters: resolver or network maintenance windows often sit at night, exactly when sweeps run. Correlate failure times before blaming the vendor.
  • Hardcoding an IP to bypass DNS trades a small failure for a future outage when the vendor rebalances. Fix resolution instead.
  • Pre-flight checks should test the real API host, not a generic internet address, or they pass while the API stays unreachable.
