## TL;DR
Press releases and SEC filings for the same event often carry different dates (announcement versus filing timestamp), and agents merge them into one timeline entry. Record both dates with their document types, and order timeline events by the event date, not the document date.

## The error
```text
timeline: 'FDA approval announced 2026-10-09' (press release date)
actual 8-K filing date: 2026-10-10; event date: 2026-10-08.
Timeline off by a day; sequencing wrong vs peer events.
```

## Fix it
1. Rebuild the timeline entry with three dates: event date (from the 8-K item text), press release date, and filing date, each labeled.
   Expected: Expected: the entry shows the event happened 10-08, announced 10-09, filed 10-10.
2. Change the timeline schema to require event_date separate from document_date for every entry.
   Expected: Expected: the agent must find and record the actual event date, not just the document timestamp.
3. Add a validation check: when a press release and an 8-K describe the same event, their event dates must match; flag mismatches for review.
   Expected: Expected: date confusion between the two documents gets caught automatically.
4. For the pipeline, prefer the 8-K's stated event date as canonical and note the announcement lag.
   Expected: Expected: timelines sequence correctly against peer-company events.

## When to use
- Your timelines show the wrong date for events covered by both a release and a filing.
- You need event-date accuracy for sequencing across companies.
- You build event timelines from mixed document types.

## When not to use
- Only one document type exists for the event - then its date stands.
- The event date is genuinely unknown - then label it as the announcement date explicitly.
- You only need filing dates for compliance tracking - then document date is the right field.

## Why it happens
An 8-K has up to three relevant dates: when the event occurred, when the company announced it, and when it filed. Press releases add a fourth (publication date). Agents grab the most prominent date (usually the document header) and treat it as the event date. For market sequencing, only the event date is correct.

## Variant phrasings
### timeline wrong date press release vs filing
Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.
### agent confused announcement date filing date
Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.

## Edge cases
- 8-Ks filed late can have event dates weeks before the filing date; the gap itself is informative.
- After-hours announcements dated the next business day need the actual announcement timestamp.
