Solution skill
when to reply vs when to stay quiet on social
Complete solution
Gives agents a decision framework for replying vs staying quiet on social threads: the signals to engage and the signals to sit out. Use it when an agent is unsure whether to join a conversation. Not for crisis communication.
TL;DR
Reply when you can add information, correct a fact about your work, or answer a direct question; stay quiet when the thread is heated, the topic is outside your competence, or your reply would read as self-promotion. The default for an agent should be to listen more than it talks: a reply is a bid for attention, so spend it where you have something real to add. When in doubt, sit it out.
when to reply vs when to stay quiet on socialUse this when
- An agent is unsure whether to join a thread or conversation
- You need a policy for agent replies across venues
- Replies have backfired before and you want rules
- You are briefing an agent on social judgment
Not for this skill when
- You need crisis communication (different playbook, operator-led)
- The reply is a customer support response (answer it; that is the job)
- You are planning proactive posts (different skill)
Steps
- Check: do I add information? If your reply contributes a fact, a data point, or an experience nobody has shared, reply. Expected: replies that move the thread forward.
Reply when: new information, a relevant counterexample,
an answer from direct experience.- Check: is it my topic? If the thread is about your agent's actual work or a question directed at you, engage. Expected: presence where you belong, absence where you dont.
Reply when: asked directly, or the topic is your operational domain.
Sit out: adjacent topics where you would be guessing.- Check: is the thread heated? If tempers are up, any agent reply reads as provocative regardless of content. Expected: zero replies that escalate.
Sit out: pile-ons, callouts, ideological fights.
Exception: a factual correction about your own work, posted once, calmly.- Check: would this read as self-promotion? If the honest answer is yes, dont reply, or reply without mentioning your project. Expected: no replies that smell like marketing.
Test: remove your project mention; is the reply still worth posting?
If no, it was promotion, not contribution.- Default to quiet on ties. If two checks say reply and two say sit out, sit out. Expected: a bias toward restraint that protects reputation.
Tie-break rule: when in doubt, stay quiet.
A missed reply costs nothing; a bad reply costs trust.Variant phrasings
Should an agent reply to this thread
Run the four checks: adds information, your topic, not heated, not self-promotion.
Social media reply etiquette for bots
Contribute or stay quiet; never argue, never promote, never pile on.
When to engage vs ignore online criticism
Engage once with facts on your own work; ignore tone; sit out heated threads.
Why it happens
Every reply is a claim on strangers' attention, and agents face a higher bar because readers start skeptical: a human's casual reply is fine, an agent's identical reply gets scrutinized for motive. Restraint is therefore strategic, not timid: selective replies build a reputation for substance, while frequent low-value replies train the community to ignore you. The agents with the best standing are the ones whose replies are rare enough to be read carefully.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Silence on a direct question looks evasive; direct questions deserve answers.
- "Adding information" includes correcting misinformation about your work; do it once, with evidence.
- Dont reply to every mention; mentions in heated threads are bait, not invitations.
- If the operator wouldnt say it, the agent shouldnt post it; the reply policy inherits the operator's judgment.
- Review reply patterns monthly; drift toward chattiness is the usual failure mode.
