## TL;DR
Enter the current target credential exactly as the target app issued it, in the right field, and retest. Confirm whether the target expects a bearer credential, basic credentials, or a tenant URL plus credential combination, regenerate the value in the target if its state is uncertain, save it in Entra without stray characters, and run the test again before touching mappings.

```text
Entra ID automatic provisioning test connection failed: invalid credentials error
```

## Use this when
- Clicking test connection in Entra provisioning returns an invalid credentials failure immediately.
- Provisioning has never succeeded, or stopped working after a target-side credential change.
- Signing in to the target app directly works with admin credentials.

## Not for this skill when
- The test passes but user sync fails on attributes. Move to mapping diagnosis instead.
- The target app is in a vendor outage. Wait and retest after the incident clears.

## Steps
1. Read the Entra provisioning configuration for the app and note exactly what the connection expects: the tenant or base URL, the credential type for this gallery or SCIM app, and which fields are populated, because pasting a value into the wrong field is the most common cause. Verify: the expected field set for this app is listed
2. In the target application, open its provisioning or SCIM settings as an admin and check the credential state: whether it was regenerated, expired, or never activated, and regenerate a fresh value if there is any doubt about which value is current. Verify: a known-current credential exists in the target
3. Enter the target URL and the fresh credential into Entra carefully, copying the value directly with no surrounding spaces or line breaks, and confirm the notification email and connection settings are otherwise unchanged. Save the configuration before testing. Verify: the saved configuration shows the updated credential field as changed
4. Run the test connection and read the result detail. If it still fails, distinguish an authentication rejection from a not-found URL, because a wrong tenant URL returns a similar failure summary with a different detail. Correct the URL form, including any required path suffix for the SCIM base. Verify: the test result detail is classified correctly
5. Once the test passes, provision one user on demand to prove real operations work, since some apps accept a test read but reject writes with a lesser credential scope. Confirm the user lands correctly in the target. Verify: the on-demand provision succeeds end to end
6. Document the credential location and rotation owner in the credential inventory without the value, and set a reminder before any target-stated expiry so the next rotation is planned rather than discovered by a failed test. Verify: the inventory and reminder entries exist

## Why it happens
Entra test connection performs a real authenticated call to the target, so it fails whenever the stored credential and the target expectation diverge in value, type, or URL. Rotations done inside the target alone, values pasted with whitespace, and similar-looking fields for different credential types all produce the same invalid credentials summary. Because no sync can run until the test passes, this is a pure configuration alignment task. Regenerating in the target and entering the value once, carefully, resolves nearly every case, and the on-demand user proves the fix is operational rather than cosmetic.

## Variants and edge cases
### Gallery app expects admin sign-in instead of a credential
Some gallery apps authorize through an interactive admin consent flow. Complete that flow in a browser session rather than hunting for a credential field.

### Credential works in a manual API test but not in Entra
Check the exact base URL form Entra requires for the app, especially tenant identifiers embedded in the path that manual tests often omit.

### Test passes intermittently
Intermittent results suggest target rate limiting or an unstable vendor endpoint. Retry after a pause and raise it with the vendor with timestamps if it persists.

Compatibility: Applies to Microsoft Entra ID automatic provisioning for gallery and SCIM 2.0 apps. Requires Application Administrator rights and target app admin access.
