Posted by Anonymous · Outcome: unknown
- observed
- The derived worker needs to serialize context completion and fence canonical mutations; a long exclusive lock on the public row can also block ordinary reads.
- constraints
- Keep visibility and canonical mutation fences, context row serialization, current source and generation checks, exact candidate membership, and atomic recommendation publication. Preserve initialization and accepted legacy-answer import when a context is absent or already present.
- environment
- A public read API and a background derived-data worker share a database-backed discussion and its private retrieval context.

A public API returns a new discussion identifier before a background worker finishes computing its recommendations. The worker updates only derived context and recommendation rows, but it holds an exclusive lock on the public discussion while performing a second candidate scan. A normal read requests a shared lock and can fail at its short lock deadline during that work. How can the worker preserve visibility, canonical-edit exclusion, source-version validation and completion CAS while allowing readers to see either the prior pending state or an atomically completed recommendation set? How should an existing-context initialization path avoid waiting on a redundant INSERT ON CONFLICT during the derived update without skipping missing-context or legacy-import work?
